An Interview With Exxtralife

Exxtralife is a young rap artist from Washington DC.

He plans to do a Lupe Fiasco cover concert on May 30th in Annapolis, Maryland.

This was a good enough reason for me to sit down with him and ask him some questions.

Here's what he has to say:

lupendblog: Tell us who you are and where you're from.

exxtralife: Exxtralife, coming From DC/North Carolina, my real name is Devin Wheeler and I'm16 years old.

lupendblog: Ok...so what do you do? I know that you plan to do a Lupe Fiasco cover show, but what are you doing besides that?

exxtralife: I am a poet/rapper/and I produce and mix and master my own music and work for other in house artists...I started this local grass roots label called STILL DREAMING. It's kinda like the dc version of the native tounges

lupendblog: How long do you already produce/rap?

exxtralife: I've been producing for about 5 years and rapping for at least 4. I really like to focus on the spoken word rather than traditional rapping...kinda like the last poets.

lupendblog: That's interesting...so you like to keep away from the mainstream and do things a little different compared to other artists?

exxtralife: yes I guess if you had to compare me to any(mainstream) rapper you would say it would have to be MF DOOM( I respect him because he seprates his bussiness from his private life) he's a really dope rapper and his metaphores are crazy umm...lupe, mf doom, kanye west, and blackstar thats basically what people describe me as.

lupendblog: Ok. So is there anything you're working on right now? Is there anyting we can expect to hear from you?

exxtralife: stay on the look out for ... some of my personal friends che(hearts), cold spring fallout, the sp.ed.mixtape.. (compilation) also the offical StillDreaming Album. Two songs that wil be on my myspace are "Viacom Brainwash"... and I believe "Leave It On The Shelf" and oh yeah... "Self Exxpression". Most of these songs except the last one came out of anger from the stuff that plagues our televison sets eveyday.

lupendblog: That's interesting. Did you do a song against MTV?

exxtralife: Yea the idea came from just a weekend of watching tv and seeing how much stupidty we see on tv...like most people dont know how much Viacom controlls like BET,Comedy Central, Cartoon Network...and so on.

lupendblog: Yeah there's so much bullshit going on.

exxtralife: And so many other things and it's a real shame that voices are silenced playing the fame game in the rap world and everyone doesn't want to name names and everyone's beefing, dissing or does ice rap.

lupendblog: I totally agree. Lets start talking about that show you plan to do. Where did the inspiration for that come from?

exxtralife: I'm not going to front, I'm not going to say I jumped on the Lupe Fiasco band wagon ever since I could've been...but when I heard Kick, Push it inspired me to start digging and to look up this guy like I heard rumbles of the brother on some rap blogs but didn't really check him out ... but anyway I copped the ablum actually on accident to be honest with you. But I totally enjoyed it and I'm a big fan now.

lupendblog: OK...so what is the show going to be like? Are you going to perform his songs?

exxtralife: The show is going to be straight fiyah I dont want to let everything out but I plan to have it sorta like a play/slash concert not a play in the sense of like Tyler Perry ish just to further explain the charaters The Cool, The Game and The Streets...the best I know how.

lupendblog: Cool I can't wait to hear more from that show...So what are other acts right now that you are listening to?

exxtralife: I mess with wale, the cool kids, coldspring fallout, che-bay-bay umm... k-west... black thought, mos, rhymefest, and the never faliing wack ass demo tape or the cut out cardboard gangster rapperl lol umm lily allen... thats about it for this decade I mainly mess with 60' and 70' because it's the best time period in music.

lupendblog: Yeah The Cool Kids, Wale and Kanye are also high up on my list. Ok...Another question...what do you think about our blog?

exxtralife: I really like your blog... I also check the lupethefiasco.blogpot.com and I think you compliment each other really good.

lupendblog: Thank you...that's good to hear. So what do you think about the Glow In The Dark tour?

exxtralife: I LOVE IT NERD LU K-WEST RIHANNA AND I THINK CONS ON SOME STOPS. I couldnt cop the tickets in time but I need that all black lu hoody in my life cuz trilly and trully's 1st run was too expensive (I mean shipping whould have killed me).

lupendblog: yeah...that hoodie is dope...I don't really have any other questions. Is there anything else you want to say....some shout - outs?

exxtralife: I'd like to give a shout out first of all to YOU!!! umm Che-Bay-Bay- COLD SPRING FALLOUT STILL DREAMING... WWW.MYSPACE.COM/EXXTRALIFE ...WWW.MYSPACE.COM/EXXTRALIFEMUSIC, FNF UP ALL DAY UP UP AND AWAY UMM...
