man that's weird. I JUST left a comment about this no more than 10 mins ago. I knew I wasn't the only one that was thinkin that Common's new album was gonna be a problem. Good look on the post June.

ReplyDeletea that's a duh with Superstar and ONLY Superstar...and b) Common can't TOUCH Ye, especially without Ye...and I can only think of this one instance that their releases were near each other. Didn't even have an album the year CD came out. Be came out in May 05 and LR came out August. Finding Forever came out in July of last year and Graduation came out in September. So, this is the only time their releases have come within 3 months of each other.
ReplyDeleteThat being said...808s will destroy UMC, without question. Common isn't as nice as Ye, musically so he can't do it and the neptunes beats will get old after a while. I don't know why he's trying to act like he's got mad fresh style or some shit, he always tries to be whoever he's working with, first Ye then P.

Thanks, k.sidney.. yeah i thought of common immediately too.. two totally diff styles, but I just vibe with him more than kanye sometimes. Not to knock kanye's talent at all, but sometimes i'm just in the mood for "Come Close" or "The Light" and none of Ye's music is comparable to me.
ReplyDeleteIt will be tough though because UMC is going to be a new sound from Common.. as well as 808 from Kanye. Both are being critiqued (and, by some, praised) for trying something new.
Ugh, this reminds me of a horrible Finding Forever vs Graduation debate I had with some friends.
s-preme, what I mean is they are always releasing close enough that they are nominated in the same categories for the same awards. I remember Kanye sayng something like "Mann, I told you you gotta stop releasing the same time as me" in one of his acceptance speeches.
Better album? We'll wait and decide. But official awards-wise.. I feel like Kanye has just enough more mainstream appeal to win every time..
Well, I expect big things from that Common album, too. What I've heard so far was really good but what I've heard from Ye, was even better.
ReplyDeleteWith both of them releasing, we'll at least have 2 more great albums this year, that's a good thing.
What I like about Ye's album is that it's super personal and emotional and I don't know if Common can come close to those emotions on his record. If you look at it...the first 2 singles of UMC have been more club records(which is also good) but
nah..I say it again 808s and Heartbreak - Album Of The Year 2008.
Common will come close but there's nothing he can do to have the better album...No one can mess with that Kanye album. That's just my opinion though.
Kanye is like the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS of hip hop at the Grammys right now. I'm just hoping that Common is the NEW YORK GIANTS of the Grammys this year and upsets the favorite to win. Common's been around for a long time. He DESERVES that Grammy this year even if his album doesn't turn out being better than 808. I'm rooting for the underdog. Like Denzel Washington said when he won his oscar, TRAINING DAY wasn't his best performance, but they OWED him that oscar. I feel the same way 'bout Common. But hell, I'm from the CHI. As long as one of 'em bring it home, Im good.

ReplyDeleteKanye should have won album of the year for Graduation..didn't happen..he would have deserved the same award for his 2 previous albums.
And now this album is better than everything he did before..so if he doesn't win this time...when should he ever win?
Then again..you could maybe say the same about Common....ohh..Grammy's gonna be interesting...too bad they won't be nominated for the ones in 2009
wait how does Common deserve to win even if his album isn't the best? None of his albums have EVER been better than Kanye's. And the only reason Kanye wouldn't agree is cuz that's his dude. First of all, Be was a classic, but Finding Forever (though it was dope) showed absolutely no growth. It was like the B-side of Be, no pun intended. I'm just not feeling Common's new stuff, it's like he's trying to hard to sell. And when I said Common can't touch Ye, I mean in both sales and popularity which are the 2 largest factors in grammy giving. Matterfact, the ONLY thing Common has on Kanye is lyrics. His flow is the same on every song until this new project, and his personality is non-existant compared to Ye on a track. Kanye is larger than life, and therefore a much more memorable presence. He can't be touched because he transcends hip hop and language barriers. He's HUGE everywhere. Common doesn't do numbers in Japan or Ireland or Sweden. Yeezy does.

touché Premo. definitely touché. At least we can all agree that Common's the better lyricist, but yea, I see your point. Hell, if lyrics mattered more in hip hop, Lupe would be a multi-platinum artist right now.

Ummmm In my head, UMC will be better than 808s, but then again, I have HIGH standards for common because BE was such a great album and when Finding Forever came out, it was sort of a downgrade, it was still fire but BE is classic, as for 808s, it will be something new, double disc album 1 autotuned singing ye (eww, but he pulls off autotune the best) and the other disc will be the Ye we always known... also uhhh Wayne is supposedly on the Autotuned disc (eww again). Album of the year? will definitley go to Kanye probably because he is A) guaranteed to sell, prolly go platinum the first week and B) Kanye always wins some kind of award and this year there werent many albums that really came out. JADAKISS COMING THIS DECEMBER TOO FINALLY!!! and Im def waiting on that

wait dude what are u talking about? it's not a double disc, its one disc ALL singing for the most part. Sadly there's only 3 tracks I haven't heard, though I heard some will be substantially altered.
ReplyDeleteWhat I have heard is all straight FIRE. The disc will be classic, its pop art, Andy Warhol on record, it's amazing. And what I mean by pop-art is art that both critically engages AND reflects the current state of all art around it.
Jadakiss CANNOT make albums...he can rap for days but makes terrible LPs.
