Lupe Fiasco speaks on FNF Roster Changes

The good folks over at RubyHornet spoke to Lupe today. They talked about his Remember 2 Smile concert in Chicago which will go down tomorrow and much more...at one point Lupe decided to address the roster changes at his label FNF.

"I got rid of, and you're the first to know, but I got rid of the entire First and Fifteenth Record Label. Me and Sarah Green are the only artists on the label, like I got rid of the whole label," Lupe told me today.

He said that it came down to his ambitions going beyond his abilities, and something that he had to correct. "It was just such a 'this isn't right for you right now. This isn't gonna work for you right now. You need to focus on you,'" he added...

The full interview will be up on RubyHornet, soon!

  2. Wait, what happens with the songs that Santos is on in Lasers? Will they no longer be on there?

  3. WTF, this is crazy. Why Lu Why?

  4. He didn't sign with Jay because he wanted to build FNF up...and now he goes and starts from scratch all over again? damn. Really dissapointed about santos and bishop no longer being part of the FNF crew..

  9. Its hard for most people to understand why unless they were in Lupe shoe's... trust me, If this was about a year ago, then I'd be asking the same thing "why", but just know it was for a reason that cannot be really explained unless you are in Lu's shoes...

    Welcome to the industry

  10. So he did it to market his own Lasers album?? Idc how you look at it that is just fucked up if he didnt tell them before hand. Any why keep Sarah green? like seriously Matthew Santos was the gem in that label.

  13. What about Gemstones? What does this mean for Japanese Cartoon. i understand where Lu is coming from tho. I think he wants to focus on him as an artist...especially since he wil be in the spotlight since he isn't retiring. FNf really hasnt been the same since Chilly/The Cool. I'm sure everyone will be fine. ...Always considered Santos as his own artist anyway.

  14. wat was the point he might as well join roc a fella now and to rival cash money young money

  15. okay...I wasn't expecting this at all, but the choices he made to disband FNF makes sense. He can't focus on a whole group of artists if he's having his OWN problems as an artist. It's just sad to see that Matthew and Hey Champ are no longer a part of it. They both have a LOT of potential. I wonder what's happening with them now, music-wise...

  16. Why drop the WHOLE label? Why not get someone to share creative control of the label? That makes no sense no matter how he puts it. I feel for Matthew Santos most of all, but FNF or not, I am a Matthew Santos fan and I'll support his music. I'd hate to speculate, but since Chilly is gone, it seems like there has been some changes....maybe some funds that are no longer available that were before he was locked up.....just sayin...

  17. so does this mean FNF is over?
or is it just that everyone except lu and sarah green are off the label?
as long as he doesn't go into cash money millionaires and becomes "too" commercial it's fine with me

  18. Well seems like there's a lot to hear from Lupe tomorrow, another busy day is coming for the blog haha

  19. Mano will be good. Hey Champ has already moved on and produced a sick track for the Cool Kids. Them and Santos will get their own deals. FNF was just a vanity label anyway. Guess Lupe just wasn't the businessman he thought he was. No big deal. He's still a smooth artist, just nothing more than that.

  20. Remember this, A label wont get anywhere without distribution... FNF is just an independent label WITHOUT distribution. Lupe has distribution through Atlantic, as for the other artists, they never had distribution... so truthfully, being dropped from FNF doesn't mean anything... I doubt they even had a contract behind them while they were with FNF...

  21. probably means nothing really...it's not like he's kicked them in the balls...it was good while it lasted.

  22. Should have signed with Hova, smh.

    RIP FNF.

  23. He needs a CD out...Bad. Will help him immensely.

  24. So does this mean Matthew and Lupe are not cool anymore? No more collaborations between the two?

Santos is incredible. I hope the right deal comes along for him.

  25. Matthew's twitter page says the following:
" # not dropped, contract expired and Lu n I decided not to re-sign. we still cool and will prob make more tunes in future. thanks for the luv..26 minutes ago from web"

    http://twitter.com/matthewSANTOS

maybe this is a way for Matthew to become more indie..he needs to be on SNL

  26. OMGGGG!! Worrrrd??
    Never thought the day would come ={
But I can honestly see why he did it, im still sadd, but I trust in Lupe's decision. Yall have nerve to say 'shoulda joined jay-z'... Lu is not a follow the leader kinda artist (clearly) so it wouldnt make sense for him to sign with j anyway.. get it right.
    Still love u Lu =]

  27. sad news... waiting for word straight from the king of the mountain...

  28. matt and hey champ will be fine ... no hard feelings ... fnf just a vanity label anyway ... lupe has to focus on his own stuff ...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm shocked. WOW. I loved Santos. Something is going on. First he wanted to retire. That was postponed. Now FNF is over. WTF IS GOING ON? But he got to do what he got to go you know? Sometimes you just can't keep ppl down like that. I think this was a selfless choice he made so at the end of the day I'm proud. It's just fucked up how it had to end like this.

  30. hey didn't Gemstones and Matt Santos post before?

anyway, this is crazy. What ever happened to Shayla G?

    ReplyDelete
  31. The only thing Bishop G will ever be signed to is birth certificates.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yea um its a GREAT thing Lupe didn't sign to Roca fella! Dropping everyone from the label like that is his own decision, and he probably has a validated reason. We'll see where he's going with this one Can't wait to here LASERS...c'mon Lu drop that album soon man--we're waiting!!
