Complex's Top 25 Albums of 2009: #19 - Enemy of the State

I really wonder why the people over at Complex.com included 6 mixtapes in their "Top 25 Albums of 2009" list...well, Lupe's EOTS mixtape made it to position #19 on that list, here's what they say about it:

The Complex Co-Sign: Even if it was a mistake, we’re happy MTV left Lupe off their hottest MCs list. The exclusion clearly ignited a spark under the rapper and led to the lyrical onslaught that is Enemy of the State. Wasalu rips beats old and new alike, making it hard to leave him off any more lists, even if it gets him inspired.

  1. The list is pretty solid, or more close to an opinion. But goddamn they don't know about music. There are some BAD selections there. MANY places should have been switched.

The Ecstatic is not there... SMH

They put No Ceilings before EOTS. Even if I hate it, I admit it.
Being lyrical was just not enough Lupe. Some original production & length would have done it, some Fahrenheit-like production, if you know what I mean...

I like seeing Phoenix in that list, Wolfang was awesome. :D

The Dream's at #2, OMG. While I love Love vs. Money, (as a matter of fact I was just listening to Fancy) But definitely not #2...

Attention Deficit is not on the list... Though I don't think it is THAT great, I believe it deserves a position among the top 25, but meh...

Well, it doesn't matter. Lasers is just around the corner...

    Or not.

  2. To be honest, I dont think it should have been top 25... Its not even top 25 hip hop, it was just TOP 25 ALBUMS period... now I know we didnt have that many releases this year but I mean Asleep in the Bread Aisle wasn't on there... Attention Deficit wasn't on there... What about Slaughterhouse???

What about Alicia Keys? What about Melanie Fiona??

I liked Enemy of the State, but putting it on the Top 25 album list?? idk...

    Whatever... ---> #Lasers #2010 lets go

  3. Asleep in the Bread Aisle? Never was a big fan of Asher Roth. Music is mostly a matter of opinion.

  4. I was NEVER an Asher Roth fan, but I love music so I wasn't about to ignore his album, and when I listened to it I was very surprised.. I was never a fan of his mixtapes but his album was on point! so if you never gave it a chance, you should

  5. I never listened to anything by Asher other than Asleep and it is good. Normally play it when I mow the lawn. He isn't the next Em, but he is pretty nice.

MOTM @ #1 is the truth though! Warm up should have been higher than 25 though.

  6. Truthfully wasn't much of a fan of MOTM, it just sounded too monotone'ish... I need a bit more energy

  7. Going to have to check it out. Guess I never really gave him a chance, lol.

  8. ya fam, that was my problem... I actually laughed and even said it on my show that his album would flop... soo Im eating my words now

  9. Muse - 'The Resistance' not on the list!? Lol.

  10. That whole list is completely discredited by having gucci mane's album anywhere near it

    ReplyDelete
  11. Are you serious? Horrible taste in music this dude put Gucci Maine and Nikki up there.

No Muse- The resistance, which was a pure classic.
    No Mos Def!!?
No Ceilings and EOTS are mixtapes, helloo.
    WHERE IS K'NAAN - Troubadour
Alicia Keys- The Element of Freedom

    This dudes a joke

  12. Can't say I agree with anything on this list except for Raekwon and Kid Cudi being in the top 5. I think they should both be in the top 3 with Mos Def. Eminem is kinda low on the list also. After Gucci? GTFO

Attention Deficit was pretty weak for a freshman album. Wale's verses were kinda stale and he was outshined by all his "featurings"

  14. no ecstatic
    No troubador
This list was wack for even putting gucci mane up and MOTM was up too high

    ReplyDelete
  15. lol - that list is terrible. they're clearly hip-hop orientated, so should just do a hip-hop list, not half heartedly include a few indie bands.

and eots higher than the ecstatic? the warm up?

  16. these comments make me sad, any1 who says asleep in the bread aisle is better than MOTM is just a white person

  17. Why is it everytime someone makes a list and adds a song/album/mixtape that NONE of you like, it automatically makes it invalid? gtfoh

None of you like Gucci, cool, great, I dont either, its just a list... who cares if hes on it

By the way yall think, I just assume none of yall watch TV... or go to clubs... or go to partys at all.... cuz you know, all of these elements will have something like Gucci pop up on occasion....

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lol @ the ya dont go to parties part, point blank the list is hip hop oriented and shows no diversity in taste of music, totally subjective. At least give the other albums the respect they deserve.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No diversity? so I guess it didn't have different genres on the list? yeah you're totally right.. it shoed ABSOLUTELY no diversity... from underground music, to up and comers, to made artists, to party music... I guess there was no diversity at all... my bad

    ReplyDelete
  20. With 15 out of the 25 being Rap- Hip Hop, I'd say that the "top 25 albums of the year" list is not diverse at all. Rather opinion based, with a motive to broadcast particular underground artists subject to the taste of music of that person who made the list.

That is my opinion, that's all.

  21. the entire list is trash minus the inclusion of so far gone, grizzly bear, the yeah yeah yeahs and phoenix...

regina spektor and colbe caliat's albumes are both better than every other "album" listed. No Ceilings, Enemy of the State and Nicki Minaj...even if dope (only EOTS) you can't count something as an album when it has 0 original beats. That's absurd. The list is garbage. But then again this is the same magazine that had top 10 butter faces...

way to go marc ecko..you're earning your ignorant minority card...don't ever let them tell you you aren't fly for a white guy

this is a farce that real music fans would recognize

rhymestyle you're wrong. its all hip hop and then TWO groups that jay z talked about and then two random ones they probably picked from a hat. It's an "urban" list if anything, and thus it loses hella credibility.

and anyone who said Cudi's album is #1 is dumb anyway, innovation aside, its not as good as Wale or Asher Roth's albums, Drake's mixtape and certainly not the 1000 albums that aren't on this list. Green Day? Beyonce? Rihanna? RIHANNA? For real?

Rated R shit's on 80% of this list. Regina Spektor's Far shits on 80% of this list. B spit on 70%. Shit even Green Day shit on shit. Raekwon? Where he at? This list is ass.

  22. Is anyone else here hoping that Lupe will see this list, get angry that Enemy isn't #1, and drop Friend of the People tomorrow?? LOL...I can dream, can't I? lol...

  23. EOTS shouldn't be on here but sure why not.

  24. S-Preme sorry if you don't like MOTM, but that shit is definately better than Asleep in the Bread Isle.. and I like that album. You crazy homie. Lyrically not better, but he made good shit to me, a bit emo, but musically great music.

    ReplyDelete
  25. ok...i'll concede that MOTOM vs. AITBA is my opinion but there are at least 21 albums that came out this year leaps and bounds better than Cudi...sorry hiphop isn't the end of the music trainline.
