Is it just me or does Lupe just SUCK when it comes to promoting himself. I mean like I want the best for this dude and I want him to blow up to be a superstar so he can CHANGE Hip Hop. Making a video for arguably Lupe Fiaso's WORST song ever made is NOT a good idea. Fak
Maybe he just made the video because it was in New Moon, and its doing really well right now?? Dont know...but I like the song, and I'm sure the vid's gonna be dope.
this song is going to expand his fan base and twilight is one of the biggest movies out right now people will wanna hear this track.... and hes not the only good rapper that has a little rock in him look at mos def and b.o.b they should all get on one track it would be one of the best of all time
ooooooh shit, now i completely understand wat lupe is tryna do. hes tryna get his Three 6 Mafia on. he already got a grammy, shit he had a grammy b4 his first album came out from workin on beyonces album, so wat other accolade as an entertainer can he accomplish?? an Oscar! duhh
In response to Lupe Fiasco's comments, I was giving you the majority opinion of your fan base based on this song "Solar Midnight" not mine. The fact that you say another man's trash is other etc is irrelevant if you have more than one fan, which you do. Lu, correct me if im wrong but I thought you wanted to save Hip Hop? but hey do your thing, I love RHCP too.
^^ how u finna speak for the majority of somebody fan base? that makes no sense nigga. you took a poll? door to door b? u work for the census bureau, son!?
The only thing that needs to be saved about Hip Hop is the skewed idea of what Hip Hop is. Hip Hop fans all have their own idea of what Hip Hop is supposed to be and how its supposed to sound, just because there is a song or an artist that you DO NOT LIKE does not mean that its automatically NOT Hip Hop, or should you automatically assume that NO ONE ELSE likes it.
Welcome to the world where everyone has their own opinion... You don't like something? Well I guarantee you that there are people around who do like whatever you dislike.
"Hip Hop" fans need to close their mouth for 5 minutes and actually study/observe Hip Hop before they speak out against it... It doesn't need to be "saved". And if you think it needs to be saved when a guy like [insert name] is selling more records than [insert name], then you're an all around failure. If that's the case, then the artist who sells less just needs to work on a thing called MARKETING which the other artist who sold more HAS.
Also 639k people in the US so far bought the soundtrack, with roughly about 50%-60% in digital sales... so I guess tapping into a new crowd of people was a terrible idea too right?
Hey I got an idea, you want to change Hip Hop? Why dont you go study and observe it first and you will realize what Hip Hop is...
Fascinating, I don't know what Hip Hop is? Your comments amuse me. I was born when Hip Hop came into existence in 1975, in the South Bronx 149th and Lex ave. I know Hip Hop, rapping, freestyling, DJing, scratching, sampling, beatboxing you name it. But yeah I guess a random stranger is telling me I don't know Hip Hop.
As far as Solar Midnight, great lupe is reaching and broadening his fan base, however the song is the least liked track he has ever put out. I bet if the leader of this Blog puts out a poll about the fan reaction of Solar Midnight compared to the rest of his songs, it will be the lowest. (Create a poll and prove me wrong)
And for the record I've never said what and what not Hip Hop was in the first place. What I said was that Hip Hop is dying, and of course it is not dying in terms of accumulating money but in terms of the negative view it portrays. Hip Hop is a merely the minstrel show of our times.
So if you view Hip Hop as a prospering musical genre because of the money it generates, then you are sadly mistaken my friend.
Correction: Hip Hop is merely the minstrel show of our times.
Look up "Blackface" the stereotype of African Americans. Connect it to mainstream rap music and you tell me.
And lastly, you've stated that I should try change Hip Hop instead? No, I'll just kick some knowledge instead about Hip Hop. I teach African American Lit in high school, that's it for me.
Again, you're speaking for his entire fan base, in the world where opinions are allowed to exist, people are allowed to enjoy songs that you may not like.
You do realize if Lu broadens up his fanbase, then more people would be exposed to his music, right? The Twilight saga is impressively huge, and by him tapping into that audience, he will be exposing all those people to his music, meaning more people will see the positive side of Hip Hop by hearing his music.
Something that I've learned about Hip Hop fans from studying Hip Hop is that they despise change completely.. As soon as a new Hip Hop movement arises, then Hip Hop fans despise it completely. Just because we don't have artists today like Rakim, some Hip Hop fans will automatically claim its dead... Just because Blackstar isn't as appreciated by some people today as it was 10 years ago, people claim its dead/dying/sick/etc.
Yeah there is a LOT of Hip Hop today that is very negative, but once again now you're trying to speak for the entire culture, yeah Im pretty sure that you can find 1 person who will say that Hip Hop is very negative, but I can guarantee you that for every 1 person you find, that you can find at least 3-4 more people who know Hip Hop isn't all about negativity..
Also just to throw this out there, if we want to speak about money and Hip Hop, you do realize that Hip Hop album sales have decreased drastically? Do you realize that record sales have dropped so badly that record label execs created the whole 360 deal idea? If anything, Hip Hop is DEAD When it comes to money, just throwing that out there, but back to my point..
My point is, you need to understand that Hip Hop goes through changes, it has done it in the past, and it will do it again in the future.. sometimes these changes were even necessary for its survival today.. So by you NOT supporting these changes, then the only conclusion is that you do not want Hip Hop to evolve and continue to prosper...
My advice to you is stop looking at Hip Hop from your point of view and look at it from everyone elses.. I used to have the same idea of Hip Hop like you did until I started looking at it from a broader perspective
I used to say stuff like Lil Wayne/Soulja Boy/Etc weren't "real hip hop", etc... but when I started studying Hip Hop and looking at it from a different point of view... That's when I started to realize what Hip Hop really is... What inspires us today, may not exactly inspire another the same way... That's why there are people who look up to artists like Boosie, etc... End of the day, Hip Hop inspires all of us, and that's all that is really important
Hip Hop provides dreams, it provides hope, it provides escape, it provides jobs, it provides life... it teaches, educates, takes care of us, helps us, pushes us, and more... Just because a certain song or something may not inspire you, I can guarantee you that there is someone else who does get inspired
Think about that the next time you kick knowledge about it
Look to state whether or not lil wayne, jayz, or Lupe is Hip Hop or not isn't the question. The question is whether or not Hip Hop is the product of what it's creators intended it to be.
You say Lil Wayne, etc is Hip Hop? You are correct, technically. Now my conservative view about the 1970's Hip Hop is that the use for Hip Hop should be protected. The mere fact that Lil Wayne is the face of Hip Hop in the eyes of the average teenager angers me. The youth indoctrinates this notion of what Hip Hop is, you see? Now as far as the "change" in Hip Hop over the years. It has expanded creatively and beautifully in some areas; however, in the mainstream it has lost it's purpose. What I am talking about is mainstream Hip Hop. Mainstream Hip Hop is what represents Hip Hop to the average music listener in America.
You say -- "Hip Hop provides dreams, it provides hope, it provides escape, it provides jobs, it provides life... it teaches, educates, takes care of us, helps us, pushes us, and more..."
You are correct merely because of the fact that experience is teacher. How does Lil wayne enlighten me? Please tell me.
"Ran into a super woman, turned her to a super bitch, hit her with that super dick, she be cumming super quick."
"Imma spare everything but these n-s I flip the gun and gun fuck these n-s take the knife off the AK and cut these n-s"
Only God knows what will happen if one of my 16 year old daughters gets abused by a Hip Hop influenced thug who listens to lil wayne.
"So by you NOT supporting these changes, then the only conclusion is that you do not want Hip Hop to evolve and continue to prosper..."
But yeah I guess there is a place for Wayne in Hip Hop. And um, like myself being born in 75' Hip has evolved and prospered, yup.
Again, you are singling out something out... yeah for the most part Wayne doesn't exactly have "inspiring content", but he did make a few songs such as Receipt, Hollywood Divorce, Hustler Musik, ghetto rich remix, etc where it comes more from the heart.. Not that Im saying Ill agree with his music, Im just saying that Wayne has made songs before where he was saying something...
Plus if you look at where Wayne came from, that can be an inspiration for you to chase your dreams, I mean the kid grew up in the worst part of New Orleans, but he had a dream.. He brought his dream to reality, he really pushed himself above his limits, he really exceeded the average artist's capabilities be literally taking over and creating a name for himself from scratch.
And as for your daughter, yeah thats not really the type of music that you may want her to listen to, but the world is full of far worse corruption than listening to Wayne... Just because someone may listen to lyrics like Wayne's, doesn't necessarily mean it will influence these kids to accept them... Im the prime example who used to listen to artists like Wayne when I was younger, but instead of accepting it, I REALLY listened and observed.. Not once in my entire life did I accept his lyrics, never did I walk around calling girls bitches, never did a song influence me to drink/get high..
I will say that there is usually a connection between people listening to negative music and taking part of negative acts, but I have never met someone who did any of these acts because of the music, most of these acts were influenced by their environment.. if a child is in a negative environment, then it is likely that they will partake in these acts, so you cant really use music as a scape goat to blame these kids for what they do... if anything, you can use music to study and assess the youth and help them... What people listen to, really reflects what kind of person they are sometimes... Music has a very close connection with who someone is, so if you know what kind of music they listen to, you should be able to use that as a sign to reach out to them and really help them
Music reflects someone's soul sometimes, so it can even help predict where someone may be heading in their life, how someone thinks, how far someone is inspired to go in life, etc
"What people listen to, really reflects what kind of person they are sometimes"
I try not to nag but you say somethings that are really eyebrow raising. So are you telling me that 428 million people in this country are like Lil wayne?
A lot of the music videos do not portray the normal lifestyle of the average American living today. Children watch these videos and see fat gold chains, large diamonds, fancy cars with “22” inch rims, and they are very fascinated by this. They grow up thinking "this is the lifee" and they go about that way. They are subconsciously affected by the music, just like you say it hits the soul.
I'd get into all the study that social scientists have done and all that but its irrelevant. Just take a look out your window and you'll find your answer, that is if your around it for one I highly doubt due to your remarks about hip hop not affecting the youth.
Definitely gonna have a rock feel to it.
