Review: Lupe Fiasco @ the Midland Theatre in Kansas City

Lupe performed at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City, MO yesterday and Back To Rockville put up a review of the show. Check it below.

Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco’s Kansas City debut promised to touch the sky, but left many fans hanging in midair. While Fiasco’s 65-minute set was strong, the lack of an encore left the brief evening seeking resolution.

As his guitar player noodled a riff reminiscent of “Sweet Child O' Mine,” Fiasco launched into “Shining Down,” a song he released as a online single last year.

A handful of similarly low-profile or unreleased cuts were sprinkled throughout the set. It has been three years since Fiasco’s last release, and the crowd happily embraced the new material... Click HERE to read more.

  1. Man, I feel like anyone who has seen Lupe perform live before knows that he did not bring his A-game last night. I honestly don't know if he broke a sweat. From the moment he walked on stage, his energy was nowhere near where it was the other four times I've seen him, and aside from the Glow in The Dark show I saw him in, this was the first time without an encore. Either he was not feeling well, or he was pissed at the way the crowd conveyed their lack of interest in S-Preme.

  2. The first opening act was cool. He started off with a DJ set then brought out a horn section and got down on some James Brown type-shit, which the crowd was feeling. S-Preme then came on and people was feeling it at first, but his set was almost 45 minutes long, which i felt was way too long for an opener. And his set was strictly just him and the DJ, so the crowd grew tiresome. Towards the end, the crowd even signaled him to get off the stage and started chanting "lupe, lupe", which I thought was disrespectful, but his set did seem excessively long though. And then Lupe came on stage.

Now I had never been to a lupe show but i've seen clips on youtube of the other dates on the Steppin Lasers tour. Now idk if he was sick or mad because people were booing S-Preme, but it seemed different than usual. He rarely looked at the crowd. even when he was facing the crowd, his eyes were always closed. or he was looking at the members of his band, simon, or his security personnel on the side of the stage. Still energetic performance, but seemed very breif and no encore. just a quick "thank you kc" and exited the stage.

I love Lupe, but idk....i kinda expected "more" I guess, but good night nonentheless.

  6. Dear Mr. Lupe Fiasco,
Your show in Kansas City Sunday night was truly a disappointment. To not even do an encore for your fans who had been standing in line since 2 was disrespectful. It's not like you had somewhere else to be since this afternoon one of your roadies was texting my friend looking for weed. I can understand you may have been disappointed that a theatre that could hold 5,000 was barely one fourth full, but that doesn't mean you should put on an hour show and not even look at the crowd. You would think since you haven't put out an album in 3 years that you would be a little more appreciative of your fans for still wanting to see you. I'm not gonna lie though, the Steppin Lazers backdrop was siiick!

  7. well, lupe definetly rocked!!! in detroit. the kansas crowd must have not brought the right energy to give back to lu and yall booed one of his acts!? wow!

  8. Something had to be bugging him, possibly the booing of S-preme or the over sized arena. It just sounds like something went wrong. He can't be perfect every time I guess. I've seen him twice and both of his performances were better than any other I have ever seen.

I was at a Kid Cudi concert a few weeks ago and one of the opening acts was excessively long. He was good though, so people were just getting anxious. They started chanting Cudi, which was real disrespectful. Sounds like the same situation as Lupe in KC.

Just an off night I guess.

  9. Okay let's be logical. Lupe is extremely selfish seeing as how he doesn't even pay his hype man who has to support nearly a dozen children. Do you really think he cares about an opening act? Do you think that personally offends him?

I mean, whatever happened to He Say She Say? Gemini? I mean I saw Shayla G the other day with a sign that said "Will rap for pennies". You dick riders really think Lupe Fiasco really cares about anyone that isn't Lupe Fiasco??

I'm sure this will get taken down because God forbid someone disagres with the blog writers about King Lupe.

  10. idk what happened with lupe in kc, in milwaukee people booed and were extremely rude to s-preme, yet lupe still gave a great performance. He did say he was getting sick tho so i think hes prolly gettting sick, understandable because hes been on the road performing for about a month now

  11. LMFAO why cant he spell scene???
And i read the rest of his posts on Facebook and it sounds like hes whining about being on tour ans away from home... but im not there and dont know anything for sure (theres two sides to every story) so who am i to judge?

  16. Bet Lupe gets dropped before Lazers even comes out.

Retirement would've been the best option....

  17. I hadn't seen Lu live before KC but I didn't think it was low energy. If anything we were super pumped that we finally got to see Lupe after an hour and a half of openers. Yes, S-Creme was terrible, yes most of the fans eventually began booing, and yes, even I began chanting "lu-pe" when S-Creme began his 6th or 7th song.

But the only thing I was disappointed with was the fact that Lu only played for a little over an hour, I thought he would at least play to 11, and most of the people I spoke with figured it was because of some strange rules the venue had. on the other hand, I think he did perform at least 17 songs, which was awesome, and I don't think anyone in the crowd was disappointed by the performance as a whole.

  18. The venue is amazing; The show was amazing except the sound. My first time of being there and found the architecture some of the most beautiful I have seen.
