Review: Japanese Cartoon - In the Jaws Of the Lords Of Death

Janine just sent us her review of Japanese Cartoon's first album In the Jaws Of the Lords Of Death. Check it out below!

“Punk’s greatest impact, however, was to show how decrepit and out of touch popular music had become” - My So-Called Punk -…Mat Diehl

The sound of thousands of indignant young people, across the nation and abroad, striking the keys on their computers while signing “The Release Of The Lasers Album” petition must sound a lot like the screeching voices, drum kicks, electric guitar riffs and the overall sophisticated garage-like sonic quality of Japanese Cartoon’s “In The Jaws of The Lords of Death”.

ITJOTLOD marks the first released project from independent Punk band Japanese Cartoon, which includes principal member Wasalu “Double J” Jaco also known as Lupe Fiasco. The album has struck a chord with many listeners.

A week after the release of ITJOTLD, an online petition directed toward Atlantic Records that demands the release of Fiasco’s third studio album “Lasers” surfaced on the net.

It is not clear whether or not the creator of the petition was inspired to take action after hearing the JC project. What is clear is that there is a rambunctious energy of revolt circling around the music of Fiasco and his team.

The greatest success of the Japanese Cartoon project is that it highlights the historical roots of resistance in music like Punk Rock and Hip-Hop.

With throaty “Fake British Accents” and lyrical black power references the vocals of ITJOTLOD feel like a wonderful cross between Malcolm X and Malcolm McLaren. Lyrics like “but a mind filled with hope/makes it easier to cope/ so that you don’t feel the rope/ as it sneaks around your throat/til they throw you from the oak” make listeners feel like they are getting a musical American history lesson charged with so much electric energy that they can still dance to it.

A list of social issues is tackled within the framework of the album. It brilliantly pulls off a general feeling of angst and frustration that can be felt by middle class young people in the suburbs of the mid-west or the kids situated in the dilapidated tenement buildings of New York City.

Shohei Otomo created the sharp, unsettling image of the album cover, which helps to filter the narrative of the songs through a particular lens. While listening, the characters and setting in the lyrics come to life in black and white images with flecks of a certain shade of grey that can be likened to the color of clouds that hover over head on the worst days.

Each song has its own charged conscience charm. Yet, the last song “Gasp” punctuates the project with the ultimate song cry of our generation, the sounds of this song feel like lonely teardrops falling on a crowded city street.

Apparently, JC is working on their next album. And of course young people are working on their next stage of protest, like the online petition. Maybe this time it will be brought directly to the doors of Atlantic Records. Whatever the outcome is, we will not lose, because we are not losers. We Are Lasers. - Janine Simon

  2. Prolyfic is what he said he is, a bitter fan. He sounds hella ignorant. Lupe has always gone left so why stop now? The world, and hip hop community especially, need an album like Lasers. How are you going to hate on a man for being different? And, trying to make a difference? Simple minded people like Prolyfic, and the heads of the music industry are what are holding Lupe back, not good music. He wants Lupe to make a hit, have you heard what are hits these days?

  3. the world needs an album like lasers...do you people hear yourselves?

how bout clean water, food, electricity, peace, justice...GTFOH Lupe is not jesus. Nor an ACTUAL revolutionary. good music. JUST music.

  4. All that stuff you talk about is going to come from people. The message Lupe is delivering in Lasers is something the people need right now. Yes it is just music, but the message can change people. Music can influence people just as good as anything else in this world

    Excuse me?
    Do you hear YOURSELF?

The world DOES TOO NEED an album like LASERS..
And *NEED is the key word here.
Everyone always TALKS about being that positive influence, but then gets on and is talking about the same shit.
Lupe IS THEE ONLY man that has EVER proven to be worthy of changing the hip hop game/ the world and everything that it currently stands for.
    Effortlessly too.
    It's all natural to him.

We won't SEE change, until WE as people ACCEPT change, and BE that change. And Lupe & LASERS is exactly the step we need.

And what do you mean "how bout clean water, food, electricity, peace, justice".....
YOU MUST NOT KNOW WHO LUPE FIASCO IS.
He symbolizes everything positive and opens our eyes everyday about things going on in this world that we're all so blind to see.
Where were you when he was climbing that fucking mountain for the global clean water crisis?
Do you know the meaning behind his trilly & truly collection???
    PEACE, ANARCHY, AND HISTORY.

    Wake up.

He may not be God, but he's pretty damn close.
(Heaven on earth if you ask me.)
The beauty of his mind, the intensity of his thoughts, the power of his presence..what a blessing he is to this earth.

    All Love,
    -Luella

  6. Yes, music is simply music, but you cannot deny its influence and cultural impact. The daily dialogue you use has been penetrated by Hip Hop culture. "Hey" has been all but replaced with "Yo." namean? Yes, music is just music, but it can impart inspiration, ideas on ppl, and thats why music with good and positive messages are important, especially in a genre so popular with the youth and so devoid of anything meaningful.

  8. This isn't a cult people. Lupe doesn't have us drinking anything. We're just people who discovered a wonderful source of musical genius in a genre that severely lacks it. The man has ideas that the majority of his fans agree with and would make the world a better place if other blind people could see this light.

    Are you serious?
Listen, people like YOU, who say that "PEACE" will never exist, DO NOT WANT TO SEE peace exist.
    And that's sad.
Everything begins with a vision..if you have no vision, you have NOTHING.
You're just being bitter, stuck in your ways with the mindset of "This is how it is, and this is how it's gonna be".
    smh.. Have hope.

And yes, MUSIC DOES TOO have the power to change the world, for music is the universal language of mankind.

Lupe doesn't care if 6 billion people hear his music or not. He's realer than that, he puts music out for the people that want to hear it, and doesn't FORCE it. Period. He's not interested in being another Lil Wayne...he stays true to his beliefs.
"SUBSTANCE IN THE PLACE OF POPULARITY".

    Take your negativity elsewhere.

  10. Being too pro-government or too radically anarchist are both stupid. There is a healthy balance between anything. IMO the problem in America as of now is too much government though, has been since the last 3 presidents for sure. That being said, Ron Paul 2012!

  11. I've been a fan since the beginning. I still am. I still read these comments and shake my head though. Lupe is a talented rapper but he is not heaven on earth. I think one problem is that his fanbase raises him to these unrealistic expectations. He is powerful but he is still man, with vulnerabilities. If creating a hit helps his album reach a broader audience - which as of now, Lasers isn't reaching ANY kind of audience,I don't mind it. After all, Superstar was "mainstream" but conceptual and conscious. Daydreamin was classic but grammy nominated. We don't need to hoard his talent and he doesn't need to cater to anyone. Anyway, rappers like Kanye, Drake, B.O.B, etc have been pushing the new "hit" music towards music about vulnerability and human emotion. Atlantic has to be expecting that kind of hit rather than a Gucci/Flocka type of sound from Lupe -____- I don't know what everyone is so afraid of. These artists put out music on the regular because their demand is so high. A few "hits" means much much much more music for us. I personally agreed with much of what Pro said even if he is bitter/out of line/ whatever. Lupe needs to treat us better. Its RIDICULOUS that we haven't had an album since the cool. Let's be honest. I do NOT listen to Enemy of the State...it was a short, halfassed mixtape with a few highlights but ultimately disappointment considering the wait and the quality of his previous work. And to come on here and flip out on US, his fans, for his music leaking? When he obviously needs to examine his circle and figure out who in his studio/office is dropping his music...ridiculous.. I feel like he honestly doesn't respect and appreciate us... and the angry rampages (rants that don't even make sense) just make me lose respect for him. This JC mixtape doesn't satisfy me, but I'm respecting his creativity and shrugging since it satisfies atleast someone out there. Its just a shame that I and many other fans I've talked to are not waiting anxiously for Lasers anymore. If it drops, I'm sure I'll play it thirty times in a row on rotation. I'll buy ten copies and encourage all my friends to do the same. If it doesn't, I'll stay content with the music I'm listening to now and this longawaited Kanye dropping in the fall. The truth of the matter is that his hype is fading and he isn't delivering...and its a shame that the best lyricist in the game isn't claiming his rightful throne in hiphop.

You do NOT listen to Enemy of the State?! WTF is wrong with you. That shit is fire. That 30 minutes is better than a lot of these other rappers careers.

He didn't blame the fans for his leaks. He knows who leaks his music. He has stated that in several interviews. There are lawsuits as we speak.

  14. @AP

    You're ridiculous.
You look for a reason to argue.
I guess that's how your people raised you.

YOU are exactly what is wrong with this world..
So stuck on the negative that you fail to see any positive..
Look in the mirror, grow up, and get it together..

    ReplyDelete
  15. Im not looking for reasons to argue.. Im just telling you what Anarchy is because it seems like you dont know and that you are lost.. Im not starting any arguments or negativity.. I dont even like arguing or fighting..

Your calling me negative because I dont like the fact that you compared a human being to GOD!!!! GTFO

    ReplyDelete
  16. With that said.. Can you explain to me what is so "POSITIVE" and "GODLY" about Anarchy???????

    ReplyDelete
  17. I understand that we're all entitled to our own opinions.

You say how YOU feel and I listen.
But I say how I feel, deep down to the core, and you fools start attacking.

    So elementary.

Also, I never said there was anything positive about Anarchy...
You twist my words up and make it into what YOU WANT to hear.
So read the statement again, THEN get at me.

  18. @Sierra Luella Mink

    Well you said..

    "He symbolizes everything positive"..

But the thing that he symbolizes the most is ANARCHY...

You also told me that I am what is wrong with the world but your the one who said that he is God on earth....

  19. @ Sierra Luella Mink

I read the statement again.. And THEN I got at you.....

  20. I don't like Sierra Mist. She tried to cut me in line during the Steppin' Lasers tour and acted like she didnt know what she was doing...fraud.

Plus she probably loves Lupe more than her own parents...

  21. Smh..

I know HATERS & fakes when I see and HEAR them.

    Sad little Souls.

  22. @Sierra Luella Mink

You can't even stay on topic or defend yourself well AT ALL, you always bring up something new and you can't stay on topic.....

You say how you feel.... But you can't even defend yourself on what you say.. And you also say things without explaining WHY..

I'm not a Lupe "HATER" BTW.. I'm a big fan of his music and I even signed the petition.. I just don't think it's right that people are comparing him to God.

Now can you explain to me why I'm a "HATER" or a "FAKE".. Because it seems the only fake one here is you...

    ReplyDelete
  23. @AP

WHO THE HELL ARE YOU to tell ME that I have to sit up here and "DEFEND MYSELF"....? ha! I don't have to say shit, be surprised that I'm even saying ANYTHING, because I usually don't even stoop to such a level. I don't respond in a certain way because that would be me giving you what you want..and I'm not even focused on you like that, honey.

..You must not know who's in charge.

This blog is supposed to be for fans to come together as one..not to constantly attack.

And once again, READ MY COMMENT AGAIN,
because ONCE AGAIN, you're taking my words, scrambling them, and making it into what YOU WANT to hear.
I never said you were a "Lupe hater". I said you were a HATER, flat out.
Never have anything good to say.

I'm so far from fake, and I have too many people that could cosign on that for me.
I stay true & REAL to everything I do, every second of the day..every hour...of every week. This is why we're having this conversation now, right?
Because I'm not afraid to stay how I feel, and stand up for what I so strongly believe in. And you can't stand it.

If you don't like my opinion, look away & ignore me.
Don't bash me for having a voice.

    Have a fantastic day!

  24. I have alot of great things so say, I just can't stand that you are comparing a fucking man to God.. And I'm PRETTY FUCKING SURE that Lupe does not wan't to be compared to God either..

    Salam

  25. When I say Lupe is Godly, I mean in the sense of power, mindful in words, deeds, even thoughts.

Sorry for you if you can't grasp your mind around that.

    smh..

    ReplyDelete
  26. You said "He isn't God but he's pretty damn close, he's kinda like a God on earth"..

And how the fuck can you listen to his thoughts????

Lupe isn't perfect at all, he's just a human being who makes really good music.

    He's not God

    He's far from it

    Your lost.

and I'm done with this bullshit.

    Free Gaza.

    Free Lasers.

    Stans & Dickriders fall back.

    Peace
