RO: As a devout Muslim, how do you feel about the Ground Zero mosque controversy?
Lupe: I'm taking President Obama's stance. Everyone has the right to worship where they please, but you do have to question the wisdom of it when you look at the reaction that it caused. I'm Muslim, so I understand the importance of practicing the faith.

But that is something that is sensitive to Americans. I don't trust polls, but there was such an overwhelming sentiment that maybe it's not the best of idea. I think the people who are building it should take that under consideration.
Would they be setting themselves up for vandals? Because now it's become a target. But on the other side, I think it's a great opportunity because Islam is in the forefront. This mosque situation is a good chance to spread what Islam is really about.
People can give commentary on how much of a peaceful religion it is. I look at the situation as a win-win. Just by you talking to me about the controversy, I get to spread the fact that Islam is a wonderful religion. The majority of Muslims are not even in the Middle East.
The majority of Muslims are in South East Asia. The point of Islam is to promote peace. But there are a lot of emotions in New York. I've visited Ground Zero so I understand that it's a sensitive subject. - Click HERE to read more!

ReplyDeleteHow many rappers do you know will speak on sensitive subjects such as religion, especially one as controversial as Islam?
Not very many. Because not very many have that type of intellect. Lupe on the other hand knows.
This is another example of why I'm not religious. Ri-damn-diculous...
ReplyDeleteLet me begin by saying that I fully support Lupe as an artist (been there since the mixtapes). He is a brilliant MC and has definitely revolutionized the hip hop we hear today. With that being said, I'll have to disagree with his statement that we "have to question the wisdom of [building the mosque] when [we] look at the reaction that it caused."
ReplyDeleteThe main argument behind this is that it's being built too close to the 9/11 destruction site, which is a very sensitive place for us. And it is. It really is. But why would building a mosque 4-5 blocks away from this site be insensitive to the victims of 9/11? The terrorists who crashed the plane into the Trade Center were Muslim. But Americans must understand that they do not practice the same Islam that is practiced by true American Muslims. The Muslims who committed those attacks were radicals. They were unable to respect the way Americans lived their lives. They were against our ideals. They were against our freedom. They believed that they were right, and were trying to force us to believe that we are wrong. But by opposing the construction of this Islamic community center, we are doing the same thing that the terrorists did- we are disrespecting the American Muslim's constitutional rights.
I think that the Islamic center should be built because it will stand as a symbol of the American ideal.
It will act as a symbol of understanding (that Muslim Americans are much different from Muslim terrorists and should have all the liberties that Americans have).
I'm sure that a majority of the people who read this blog do not really care about this issue, but I needed to respond to Lupe's statement because I respect him as an artist and as an intellectual (although he will probably never read this).
If anybody is interested, Keith Olbermann does a MUCH better job of defending this stance:

It's not a mosque.
