While Lupe was in Singapore he did an interview with Juice Singapore which can now be found in their October issue. Read an excerpt below!
Hi Lupe. You’re known for not endorsing the hip hop lifestyle…
I don’t drink or smoke. Never. No beer, nothing. So that kind of put me to the left. I never want to chase the same things that build up a lot of rap. I don’t chase what’s popular or what they show on MTV.
What else is left to rap about then, if you don’t rap about guns and such?
That’s what the radio plays, that’s what big on TV. But if you look at hip hop on a whole you’ll get stuff from people like Mos Def and Common Sense that focuses more on the real life. The other side of hip hop glamourises the negative things, but I glamourise the positive.
How do you feel about hip hop getting fused with other genres like electro?
I think it’s cool. I think it’s progression and you can’t stop it anyway. I don’t think it’s going to be the death of hip hop, but the evolution.
The complete interview can be found in the current Juice issue which is in stores now (in Singapore.) - Might gonna hit the net soon, too.
