I'm gonna start it off with Lupe Fiasco. I feel like Lupe is one of those guys in hip-hop that gets overlooked. I feel like he's one of the best lyricists and arguably the best to ever do it as well.

smart kid!
ReplyDeletekeep in mind that this is the son of one of the best to ever do it.
ReplyDeleteI was YouTube just yesterday searching for artists that fall into the same caliber as Lupe and Mr. 3000 crossed my mind first.
ReplyDeleteBy the same token, I couldn't make a list per se. By that I mean it's constantly changing, constant rotation. Might here something one second and the next moment something will top that in a way.
Like the topic though.
If you take the time to understand Lupe's lyrics you''ll no why he's the best to ever do it. Jay-Z even know Lu is the best ever, but he'll never admit it. Why? Because how would it make him look? Instead he just credits Lu as the Greastest Writer Of Our Time. Even Drake calls Lu a legend.
ReplyDeleteknow*
ReplyDeleteThe thing is if Lupe continues to make music like his early mixtapes, food and liqour, and the cool in the future he will be recognize as being a great lyricist but if he continues to make music like Lasers than he will get popularity right now but will never be considered to be great in the future
ReplyDelete^ As far as lyricists go, I still put Nas over Lu. Lu still has to make an undeniable classic album IMO though. He needs to make F&L2:TGARA better than all his previous efforts.
ReplyDelete^ Ye i like Nas and no doubt Illmatic is a classic hip hop album, I also think that food and liquor is a classic album. Nas is no doubt one of the greatest but I still think lyrically lupe beats him.
ReplyDeletesmart kid that diggy is!!
ReplyDeleteNas is over Lu, and anyone with any rap clout will tell you that. Only the younger generation thinks a hip hop legend with undeniable classics, and spectacular guest appearances can surpassed by a rapper that gained notoriety six years ago. Only the new kids where J Cole is better than Nas(where he doesn't even have an album out) and Lil'Wayne is the best ever. Only this young generation can think that nonsense.
ReplyDelete^ Even though I am young I do understand how to listen to great hip hop music and If you were to compare verse by verse between Nas and Lupe, I would have to give it to Lupe. no disrespect to Nas, i love his music i still bunmp illmatic in my car sometimes. But just because im young and in a different generation does not mean you can remove the merit I have to claim who is lyrically better.
ReplyDelete^And only the old generation thinks that the rappers from the 90's cant be surpassed. Just because one person did something earlier doesnt mean the next cant be better at it. As Jay said Nas has "a one hot album every 10 year average", and for the most part thats true. Not to mention Lu is reaching more mainstream success than Nas, which hate it or not is a factor.
ReplyDeletego listen to Life's a bitch, memoray lane, ny state of mind, it aint hard to tell exc..listen to his flow and look at lyrics then come back and talk to me ya dig
ReplyDeleteYo, Lu > Nas and any other rapper.
ReplyDeleteThe old generation niggas think nobody will ever beat rakim, nas, pac, etc. The old generations main excuse is "they started it" "they innovated" "they influenced mad other rappers"
So basically until you bring something new to the table and inspired someone you'll never be considered the greatest? That is not fair at all. That's like saying the first nigga to do the jumpshot is the best basketball player ever.
Lu has taken what the rappers before him brought to the table to new heights.
Lupe Fiasco is the best to ever do it lyrically.
^ i agree with you. The fact that one person started something doesnt mean it cannot be improved.
ReplyDelete"The thing is if Lupe continues to make music like his early mixtapes, food and liqour, and the cool in the future he will be recognize as being a great lyricist but if he continues to make music like Lasers than he will get popularity right now but will never be considered to be great in the future"
ReplyDeleteRealist comment on here yet
"Not to mention Lu is reaching more mainstream success than Nas, which hate it or not is a factor."
ReplyDeleteOkay
1. Ilmatic-Platinum
2. It was Written-2X Platinum
3. I Am-2X Platinum
4. Nastradamus-Platinum
5. Stillmatic- Platinum
6. God's Son- Platinum
7. Street's Disciple-Platinum
8. Hip Hop Is Dead- Gold
9. Untitled- Gold
You see those numbers my man, you wanna compare that to F&L and the sales of The Cool? Nah I didn't think so. Lu is getting mainstream attention right now and is still fighting to go gold.
Well nowadays people download music for free so album sales is hard to compare. Plus F&L leaked months before it was officially released.
ReplyDeleteCommercial success has nothing to do with lyrical ability anyway.
^ Point. Point. Point. Big point. Read it. Learn it. Lock it in.
ReplyDelete"Well nowadays people download music for free so album sales is hard to compare. Plus F&L leaked months before it was officially released.

I was making a point to the dude that posted above. Nas has also had many albums leak mad early and still sold records. Lu is a lyrical genius, but Nas was the original mastermind.
"Nas has also had many albums leak mad early and still sold records."
ReplyDeleteDon't know it's true or not but ok. You still have to take into account how many illegal downloads go on in this time period. Even if it happened in the 90s, it surely happens more now.
Again we are talking about lyrical content not album sales so drop the money aspect of the industry.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt Nas is a lyrical genius but I still think lupe is better. if you compare lyric to lyric vers for verse, Lupe is gonna win.
Nas is a legend, and Lu just ain't there yet...
ReplyDeleteYa'll old niggas are biased, ya'll act like no one can surpass Nas, Rakim or Pac, since the 80's and 90's, niggas have gotten lyrically advanced........in the underground, Lupe is the most lyrical rapper by far in the 30 plus years that Hip-hop has been here, the reason why u old niggas don't want to admit it is because of nostalgia, yall niggas need to wake up and get with the time and stop living in the past, Lupe today is lyrically better than Nas back then and he's mos def lyrically better than Nas now yall can't really deny that, bar for bar Lupe has surpassed Nas lyrically by the time of Food And Liquor, I'm not trynna dick ride or anything but it's true, Nas is still one of the greatest ever though.
ReplyDeleteNas is the greatest. He's produced timeless classics that I haven't heard out of Lu. Dudes like Lu learned from geniuses like Nas a nd pac. Nas is a beast and the best to ever do it. Lu is just isn't there yet and I think he's more into punk rock now so he'll never be regarded as a hip hop legend.
ReplyDeleteCall me when Lupe spits something that's on the level of Illmatic......bye, delusional youngsters....
ReplyDeleteLu made his debut album off of Nas's Ii Was Written and now a dude that has used Nas as a blueprint is better than him. Man I'm glad I know hip hop for my self.
ReplyDeletePennies from heaven is the same as the semi from the second
ReplyDeleteAnd I reign supreme
Turn your umbrellas upside down
Did you even catch the change in theme?
I don't think these oldies caught the change if you know what I mean...
Again we are not arguing that who did it first, but based on lyrical comtent.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes food and liquor is a classic album
F&L isn't on the level of a Illmatic though, and the leaked version of F&L is much better than the released version.
ReplyDeleteFailure alone is more lyrical than Illmatic, are you old niggas that ignorant?, it doesn't take somebody's age to figure out who's more lyrical, and it doesn't matter if Lupe was inspired by Nas, that doesn't mean that Nas is better by default, Lupe used Nas as a blueprint and ended up being better in terms of lyrics, we're not downtalking Nas at all we're just sayin that someone surpassed him in lyrical ability, Nas has pulled out more classics than Lupe and he's more successful than Lupe but that's because of the generation difference that Nas and Lupe came out, both are good MC's and I hope they make a track together.
ReplyDeleteNas never followed up illmatic with a album of the same caliber. Food & Liquor and The Cool are neck & neck. Nas skills declined after illmatic. Lupe's skills have improved every album, even with lasers(albeit subtly).
ReplyDeleteIt's odd. Everybody's talking about who's got the most lyrical ability, yet nobody's mentioned Canibus, the man with an arguably UNRIVALED vocabulary (freestyle and written), and a sick flow. Lupe himself has said that he looks up to the lyrical ability of Canibus.
