Now there's nothing wrong with that but why's Lupe the only one that the writer wrote about in a negative tone throughout the whole article while he wrote mostly neutral about all the other acts? Unprofessional. - Check what Phillip Mlynar had to say about Lupe below:
"You know I don't pop-pop at the bar/But I might send pop-pops through your car." Those are the firebrand boasts of Lupe Fiasco, who before finding a career as an antidote to rap's gangsta leanings attempted to blow-up by, er, positioning himself as a full-on, club-hopping gangsta type.Elsewhere in the song "Pop Pop," Lupe vows to "put the tool in your face," brags about how he's got the police, hustlers and gangstas "nervous," and details how he does all of the above while wearing alligator skin loafers. (He's a size ten, if you're feeling generous.)But when lil' Lupe realized that crime rhymes weren't going to pay for him, he wholesale flipped his image into some sort of conscious skateboarding rapper nerd who collects rare Japanese-edition Sylvanian Families figures.Nattily, the last couple of years have seen Lupe yet again develop a new persona for himself, as he seems to have ditched the idea of even attempting to make enjoyable music in preference for becoming a professional whinger and whiner.

Sounds like someone holds a grudge against Lupe and Lasers... Hmm.
ReplyDeleteI mean, yes Lu did used to have the gangster rap lyrics out there, but you can't forget.. that's what he grew up listening to. Of course it'll affect him enough to start rapping that way. And it's not a bad thing to stop and realize that that style is not him or what he really wants to do, and start being the 'nerd' he is.
Definitely unprofessional. The writer just wanted an excuse to take a shot at Lupe.
unprofessional or not, form an external and objective persepective, some of what he is saying is true depending on how you look at it.
ReplyDeleteall the more reason for Lupe to murder F&LII to show people like this HE didn't change, and that he was just putting up with Atlantic's bs
There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with refraining from negative gangster rap, considering that being a "gangster" is what is putting men in women in caskets, behind bars, and keeping fire to the black stereotype of such. So, Lupe was wise enough and thought about our future's enough to alter his subjects into making men and women think more productively. Would you rather want music that praises murder and blatantly disrespectful stereotype OR would you rather want music that is helping a young man or woman ACTUALLY WANT to go to school, get an education, be intellectually insightful, and unafraid of the person they are and NOT follow the crowd that may condone such personality. Break the ignorance. Break the historical chains of this gangster, thug mentality, and we will be free as a people and as a world...think about it.
ReplyDeletelol some of these lists are getting ridiculous
ReplyDeletei'm gonna make a list called "Top ten most athletic rappers of all time"
Shit mayne it aint nuthin big people dun change upthey act and shitz like that gotta push rrecords and change ya image aint big shit doggey. Dis list is like nothin big mayne you feel me it aint doin nuthin. But for real doe lu is dat same cat dat was pushin hustlaz and custamaz bak in the day doe. Madison street cant be taken outta mah homey lu carrera sittin my way ya feelz what im preachin doe?
ReplyDeleteYes, yes LA Weekly . . .
ReplyDeleteLet's point out this one song (among a few, granted) on his early work, but leave out songs such as Hustler's Song, Conflict Diamonds, Jedi Mind Tricks . . . etc.
Again, he hasn't changed much. His topics are generally the same, it's simply his approach that's altered.
Lupe is still the same Lupe from "Kick, Push" to "Words I've Never Said". He's still putting out the same message and there is no "persona" he's putting out there. Only difference now is his hair. People just hate (Philip Mlynar apparently) when a legit artist get's little fame. There was no drastic change, that's just what people want to see...
ReplyDeletei thought going from negative gangsta rap to conscious and intelligent rap was a good thing?
ReplyDeletepeople these days...
"depending on how you look at it" is the opposite of "objective". I hate all the retards who use pretentious big words to try and spread the pseudo-wisdom. SHUT UP! They dominate Twitter nowadays, too.
ReplyDelete^hater
ReplyDeletesince when is objective a big word lmao?
This is some of the most ignorant journalism i've ever read. It might be worst than Fox News.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find funny about this asinine writer is that he states Lu switched up because "crime rhymes" weren't going to pay for him as fact. When has Lu said that he became conscious because he'd make more money that way than being a gangster rapper(never mind the fact that non conscious rappers make more money than conscious rappers anyway)? Never, Lu never said this. Is Lu switching up because he truly feels that spreading positivity is better than spreading negativity that hard to believe?
ReplyDeleteAnd Lu has become a "professional whinger and whiner now"? Why, is it because he complains about people leaking his shit or because he's questioning the government?
Haters are going to hate. So there is nothing you can tell them to change their mind. Phillip Mlynar deserves to die within a week.
What a buncha bullshiz
ReplyDeletepop, pop? is this dude serious? thats like saying my writings changed from middle school to college. If your gonna make someone your number one on a list.. do some more research than lookin at one random song from his youth.
ReplyDeleteEhh, he's entitled to his opinion and all but, I'm with Sean on this one. Seems like he's nitpicking and dismissing Lupe as opposed to congratulating a positive change.
ReplyDeleteLupe is doin' his thing and doin' it well :)
real talk pop pops mah jam doe
ReplyDeleteI feel pop pop brah i do manz i getz that ish bro no eay no hoe you know me like dat doe its aint nuthin. My jam shit is still top notch lu mixtape track for the headz out there one time for real
ReplyDeletehes right you all are dumb. i love lupe but can you do that articleis the truth he did automatically change up on what he raps about...
ReplyDeleteHe didn't change. He's just showing that he's as complex as the rest of us. "Hood's where the heart is, Nerd's where the words from. Don't represent either, because I merged them." You can't define people with just one word, it's impossible.
ReplyDelete*rolls eyes*
ReplyDeleteok lets get one thing clear; he did change... he's much older now. Can't stand people who wont' admit that he changed, but he's a vet now so it's all good. This article is bogus though it's like I get it, you didnt like lasers; neither did I, but Lu is still better than your favorite rapper
ReplyDeleteGo head Lu switch the style up and if they hate then let em hate and watch the money pile up..
ReplyDeletehow is b.e.p. not on this list lol. this list is garbage there's no way the writer actually tried. i mean damn what about bone thugs, lil wayne, eminem, or at least andre 3000. he must have just wanted to take a shot at lupe.
ReplyDelete-___- and out of all the songs he chose "pop pop" (which he killed btw) this dude is too ignorant #next
ReplyDeleteListen to "switch".... That is all....
ReplyDeleteI agree dude sounds like a hater but he's right....Lupe's image is bitch-made now. Dude was straight G back in the day.....spittin knowledge and fire
