Id be hating right???? this is wack..he is just rambling over an original beat..be honest yall..this isnt creative...what happened to lupe? he is falling off..yall dont have to admit it..he is tho.."i copped the nsx just like pharell did".....please
This is not what I was hoping for I was looking for Lupe to go back to a raw hip hop sound with straight bars. This is okay but the beat is annoying and takes away from the lyrics.
Best thing to do in any situation is to NOT get yourself psyched for one thing because, as it usually is in life . . . you won't get your wish. Especially not when it's coming from ANOTHER person, making his OWN music/message, with OTHER people helping him.
I like it. As with a lot of music I will have to listen to it multiple times to truly capture everything about it . . . but I enjoyed it first playthrough.
YO yall know its the kid from the block, i admit i shitted on Lasers like a pigeon would on the windshield but yooooooooooooooo this is Lupe by heart just listen to his flow, dude got mad skills
now in the words of Lupe: "this is more like Sparta, kick you down the well kiiiiiiiiiiiid" to all ya haters
Somebody actually said the lyrics were good lol. he is falling........albeit pretty fast lol...its not hating either...grow up..I am a human being with an opinion who is very knowledgeable of lupe and his music..its wack...nobody wants to say so because the put lupe on a pedestal..he is a MC..MC's make music...this particular "song" is wack..for many reasons....he is essentially talking about nothing 90 percent of the song..and it lacks his creativity..That Food and liquor 2 intro...dope....but I promise u that wont be on that album...remember what i said
Hrm, well, I never recall understanding everything Lupe is saying on my first listen neither . . . from F&L to now. Only listening once and writing it off is quite a disservice to every dual meaning, metaphor and simile packed into this four minute package.
Unless, of course, it truly just makes you sick to your stomach hearing "New Lu".
I think some people get on the net just to hate because it's what that their good at. Lupe fell off with lines like "turn the maids to Bubba's motha"? There are whole lot of lines in this too. If u can't do better keep your mouth shut cause record companies aren't hiring internet a&r's anytime soon..lol
at the anonymous hating stop being a lil B*tch hiding behind that guise just come out and say it. i gotta admit those lyrics were dope i didnt understand half those references made.
I can't be the only one who sees a somewhat Jay-Z, Watch The Throne-ish type flow particularly with the minor pauses in between lines. The beat made my draw this comparison too.
It is an alright song, nothing to write home about, at least on a Lupe scale. I'm still waiting the mixtape to have some new classics, this isn't one. Gonna go listen to it a couple more times...
Of course u would agree with him on his site...go on other sites and look at some of the objective comments..other people think he is falling off as well...trying to hard to be a rebel..its suppose to come naturally..
This is nice. Real fans always appreciate new material. Not to mention is it me or does it sound like lupe freestyled this track? I'm sure that would shut the haters up.
Lyrics are actually better than most of Lasers, but I definitely don't think this sounds like Lupe. I'm just tired of how upfront everything he writes is. He keeps using this same slow and boring flow. No metaphors either?...Lupe just keeps spiraling downward.
People on the internet hate on everything so going on other websites and reading a bunch of hater's by occupation opinions is pointless. And to person who said something about the "NSX" line, you might want to think about the line a lil bit and remember what Lupe is known for..
meh wasn't wat i was expecting but aye thats life this is average i was hoping for more revolutionary content or more intelectual content period (with a name like friend of the people shouldn't be any room for any fillers such as this to much going on in the world to talk about) but i'll hold my full critique until the entire project comes out
then... Lupe has definitely fallen off. Lupe said he was going back to what got him here in the first place with F&L 2 and if F&L 2 sounds anything like this track then oh boy...
While I hope the rest of FOTP has more of a feel of his old mixtapes, I am not the least bit disappointed with this. The first "single" is going to the the most "mainstream". FIRE!
Funny how people complain about the beat not being original, yet EOTS were composed of other beats and was acclaimed as amazing. Whatever, love Lupe, digging the lyrics, and can't wait for what's in store on FOTP!!!
Funny how Lu can't do anything different without people presumptuously stating he's lost his savvy lol liked the production, lyrics were on point but Lu... you gotta flow better than that. Flow wasn't bad or anything but (if you're reading this) you literally need to shit all over FOTP to silence the naysayers and speculators lol from one subversive and abstract mind to another, "there's nothing worse than knowing you're beautiful but you're treated like an ugly duckling (props to Tech N9ne for that line)". Keep along the path of your accordance, Lu. (And please silence these people that distort their subjective opinion as fact)
""Funny how I'm always sick if you never catch a thing Argue with your friends over what really the record means""
It seems to me that Lupe doesn't like the fact that there are fans that like his music because his lyrics aren't always concrete.
The funny thing is we know what Lupe means or else why would like something we don't understand? Yeah there somethings that we don't understand 100%, but you can say the same thing about any WRITER never mind rapper.
Lupe needs to know that his lyricism is unmatched is the one thing that COMPLETELY separates him from other rappers and is a huge argument for why he's the best to ever do it. Lupe fiasco's positivity is also part of it, but if weren't for the he cleverly articulates it he would have as much respect as he currently has.
The one thing I know is if it weren't for Lu's lyrical ability and creativity Jay-Z wouldn't have called the greatest writer of our time and I wouldn't be calling him the best rapper ever, dead or alive. So I understand why he felt the need to "diss" those that like to breakdown his records. Maybe it's because those same people are the ones that are giving him heat over Lasers, but it was to be expect though. After a 2 year and a half delay, a petition, and a protest, I think it's understandable why people are throwing a fit.
I mean the line itself is clever especially when you hear the lines following it:
""Back and forth - a balanced course, with professor's refereeing Why he so rebellious? Up-front with his realness? They wanna be Fiasco's, reproduce his Failures Emperor is his alias, but not Marcus Aurelius This is more like Sparta: kick you down a well, kid""
I just don't like the fact that Lu insists that we don't understand what he is saying and that that's the reason why we like him. Once again how can you like someone's lyrics if you don't understand what that person saying??? Makes no sense.
Incredible. Wasn't expecting New Lupe Fiasco. This song strides a balance, newer pop/electro/hiphop sound, but so much deeper with conscious lyrics, super relevancy (#OWS), crafty wordplay & swagged out like only Lupe can do it. Honestly, it's refreshing to hear this. I'm gettin tired of hearin so much of these other rappers talk bullshit. Lupe is "real" artist. IMO, he is one of the best rappers alive and this record just adds to his resume and position of all time great. Also, he's moved on beyond selling records, I feel like Lupe has a message he's trying to get out. He's using his position now, his outlet, to say things and speak on social issues, for the people, for all of us.
This is an amazing song, great beat and lyrics. I would've liked the chorus to play 3 times and the rapping split up, but that's being picky. To all those saying he's changed, do you still wear the same clothes from 2006? Shit changes, the message is still there but just with a different style. Old school Lupe is great, new school Lupe is great. He is the best musician in the world.
Man this joint got that epic feel 2 it its way more than just music and words this is a SOUNDTRACK TO A REVOULTION!!!! How can u not feel this shit??? (MOre Than music yaw more than music)
said I love this song Lupe keep doing what you're doing people always going to have some negative remarks and hate because they wish they could be you especially when you're doing something good so dust the haters off they can kiss your black ass like my momma told me worry when people stop talking love you bro keep doing what makes you happy some people never satisfied and I voted for you on People's Choice Award and by the way this is L.Davis
"funny that I'm only sick when you never catch a thing"
....EVERYONE WAS LISTENING TO YOU BEFORE. That's why you were sick in the first place. Fuck, the record label has ruined your mind. Rebel, rebel, rebel, rebel. Okay, we get it, Lupe. Now go back to making quality music about rebellion. Anybody can write the lyrics that are on this song and Lasers. It was the rebellious talk on F&L/The Cool that made people love you. You never needed to 'dumb it down'. The old Lupe knew that.....he even wrote a song about it.
i'll be honest this song isn't worth a second look to me. Lu, if you read this..your music had a much bigger impact when it was actually amazing music. anybody can make a regular song about anarchy. you used to go above and beyond which is why people listened to you. now you're just another artist on the radio.
Dude whay all the hate? It's new Lupe material and a mixtape release date! I'll bet a majority the people who are complaining about him dumbing down the lyrics haven't even listened 3 times yet. This is pretty good as far as wordplay goes. Not like Game Time or 1st & 15th is Back, or anything...but still nothing to bitch about.
This is suppose to be Lupe's 'light' work correct? Can't wait for him to go HARD.
Please Lupe, please go HARD on this mixtape. I need you to go IN man. I need you to make all these other rappers seem like soulja boy.
I need that 2 man pig pun Lupe. I need that 1 man slaughter house Lupe. I need that 2 album Jay-Z Lupe. I need that 1 nigga Wu-tang Lupe. I need that young and hungry Mos Def Lupe. I need that conscious rappin Lil Wayne Lupe.
wow this "we want old lupe" is just as hilarious as people want the "old" linkin park back. its best that artists work on new projects rather than sticking with their old work or else you won't be calling F&L a classic if you keep hearing the same style. if you're truly a fan, then accept this NEW and FREE music. after all Lupe is the Friend of the People
stop hating. his lyrics are on point. no, its not failure, not lupe the killer, not pop pop but its also not lasers. find me a rap song this year by a relevant artist that is better lyrically then hate
Imagine what bs people would say if LightWork was replaced with "The National Anthem". These people nowadays just care for how the song "sounds" like...open your fucking eyes
why is everyone crediting this hook and "sound" to Lupe?? Um...Lights has BEEN a song and this bassnectar rmx has BEEN out......
that said..dope lyrics, booooooring flow. I expected him to go ham on a bassnectar dubstep track...especially one this sick but naw...he went to sleep instead
I enjoyed it. I've been a fan since 2006. I like the old stuff and the new stuff. The content (metaphors and double entendres) and message is still there in the lyrics. I don't see what all the bitching is about.
Uhhh no, it definitely is not there. Everything is stated pretty straight forward. Did you even listen to the song? haha He just says what's on his mind. There's barely any wordplay or metaphors. Just basic rhyming.
I read some analyses of this track and its shocking how wrong some people are... I mean its not like my man went "Dumb It Down" on this track. Its called LIGHTWORK.
The part where he says, "While we waiting for that compromise, proceed with a cautious eye" He is referring to the struggles of the Palestinian people in Palestine. Lupe is MUSLIM and he loves his people.
The Palestinians have been trying to reach a compromise for almost 100 years now, yet those Israeli scum-bags keep killing for no reason. Thats why he says, "Proceed with a cautious eye"
The next verse in which he says 'Occupy' is a more direct reference to the pigraeli occupation. Though it DOES have a double meaning though (Occupy Wall Street)
[Never underestimate about of Da'wah my brother puts into his lyrics.. Asalaamu'alykum]
yall tweaking if you dont like this joint. that is nice rapping, cadence, delivery, and rhymes. this song is called lightwork the idea and title of the song went over yalls heads too. Listen to the chorus then read the lyrics then listen then make your decision on the track.
For me the best line in this song represents how most of us feel about the real Lupe and he is real Lupe in this song even though it is "Lightwork" my favorite line is when he says "I'll never human the sung lyrics in a spirit thats superhuman to some"
Im convinced people can't separate lupe the person from his music. As a person he is good person (imo). He seems genuine in his efforts and philanthropy. His music Post 2007 tho??????? VERY suspect at best. Everything is straightforward..and im a grown man..lines such as "touch more souls/soles than a dance floor" and Copping cars (NSX)..are corny, lame, and preschool.. ESPECIALLY from an MC of his caliber. The sparta line was also weak..This is a person who personified a cheeseburger and told a story while doing it.. Granted he isnt going to do that all the time, and thats fine..but THIS?????? there is a reason people are "complaining"..and it's not in vain. His music just isnt as impactful anymore and i can discern pretty well. He no longer inspires me..he is just like most rappers now rambling on songs about nothing.

Thank you very much for writing this because this is EXACTLY how I feel. I could not have said this any better myself. This is how most, if not ALL, "original" Lupe fans feel. And it is very depressing since the main reason why we chose to follow Lupe is because he was extremely intelligent and knew how to convey positive messages through his music without succumbing to the "stupidity" of the materialistic, lack luster Hip Hop industry. He was the only artist to write intricate and intelligent pieces of POETRY, which is what hip hop is supposed to be: a poem that is recited to music. And without the music, you should still have a poem. But post "the cool" and especially throughout "Lasers", Lupe has started to do everything that he said he was so against: Dumbing down his art in an effort to increase popularity.
Yes Lupe, you will have a lot more fans now, but they will never appreciate you for YOU. And they will never really know your music and art. They'll just come in thousands to jump up and down to the beat of uninspired works like "show goes on."
Yes, we gave you a chance during the whole lasers fiasco because we all know how record labels and contract obligations can be. But now that I really think about it, if you really wanted to preserve your artistic integrity, then nothing in the world should've made you sacrifice your art and self-respect the way you did when you ended up releasing lasers. And even after you publicly denounced the album, you're performing MOST of the songs off of it in concert tours, award shows, and etc. What the hell's up with that?
As your fan from the very beginning, I stuck with you through the abomination of Lasers, but things seem to only be getting worse. With the release of "Lightwork", you're just furthering the lyrical downward spiral and combining that with even more processed/commercialized music. You're just rambling on about nothing, talking about yourself like every other rapper, and making elementary, materialistic analogies like the rest of the industry. Compare this track to the tracks on any Fahrenheit 1/15 mixtape. I mean CMON! What the hell is going on with you?!
Food and Liquor 2 is will be the deciding factor on whether or not Lupe is still Lupe. It upsets me to say it but, if not, then i'm done.
Honestly the people are hating on, this are hating because of the beat. IMO this is SLR with a slightly weaker flow and better punchlines(if u caught them yet ;)). People just have a Laser's hangover on want to hear him rap over some recycled bootleg Dilla beat with a sample.lol
Most of the time, I try to abstain from denouncing an artist and I honestly believe that Lupe still has the ability to create classic rap music that conveys a positive music in an intelligent and uniquely articulated manner, but Anish and the Anonymous above him/her are actually correct and vocalized my thoughts. Someone is probably going to spazz on me for this and allow me to reiterate that I do not believe lupe has "fell off" (look at Eminem for the definition of this), but ALL of Lu's work from the Cool and back was both impactful and subversive. Those albums and mixtapes held an identity and peculiar ability to send chills down the listeners spine... Lupe's work was inspiring and so intricately crafted that I couldn't help but respect the work of a fellow poet. If you honestly get the same effects from his work after the Cool, than by all means, hold your opinion of his music dear. Unfortunately, there are quite a few of us that are waiting for Lu to unleash that classic musical potential. So when someone says they miss the Old Lupe, they are simply reminiscing on a time when Lupe's art was, so to speak, artistically pure. Lupe, I know you look at this site from time to time, so I think it's only fair that someone says this: We miss Lupe the Truth, the guy thy was a breath of fresh air. One that strayed from the materialism of the current hip hop community and only released music that was revolutionary. I understand human duality but you are giving us music by Wasalu while your actions are that of Lupe Fiasco. Yes they are different individuals and still one in the same, but you're displaying an annoying amount of your rebellious side... towards your fans. Rapping about your cars and how many fans you've accumulated is NOT anarchic. You're actually acquiescing to the very system that you're supposed to oppose. If you want to be a carbon copy of every tapper out there and try to veil that with a slight positivity, so be it. Just realize that some of the individuals that who saw their thoughts and ideals vocalized by Lupe Fiasco will have to witness your conformity and be silenced.
I want Lupe from 2007 and before back: He was so pure with great songs about how good he was at moving cocaine, heroin and crack. Songs like Failure, Didn't U Know, Lupe the Killer, Absolute freestyle, Fast Money (this is one of my favorite line in the song "Where we tip into Chi-Town if you cook a key you will see If you chop the nickels that you can get a drop and a box of pistols Have to get it cocked so you can not get little"). Lupe dropped crazy knowledge then too "If you get her brain then the hoes will follow".
Then there were the songs about bragging like Boss Player, I Gotcha, Champ is Here, Ooh, Fast Money ( "The first Beemer that they ever saw on these streets came with the rocks that I slung like David").
I also like the way he rapped on Much More. For some reason it made shoplifting seem so appealing.
Lupe, I know you are reading this, please bring back those raps about slinging crack, sending pop pops at the bar, delivering mean product like Leroy Green, also about how your perfume pursued them everywhere that they went.
Lupe, I wish you hadn't changed. Now you are namedropping movies like Sankofa, talking about juggling wants n needs and black female identity (why? just get a her brain then the hos will follow)
I love Lupe and this is my favourite Ellie Goulding track and to have Lupe rap over it is awesome!! He definetely takes it to that next level! And for whoever says the beat is shit, its dubstep! How can you hate on dubstep!? Lupe is fire!!!!!
On behalf of all the paragraph-ers I would like to offer my sincerest apologies. How dare I voice my opinion at the expense of a few minutes. Oh woe is me, witnessing my life wither away for the sake of subjective thought and analysis. Neglecting my potential grandeur, only to waste the precious moments of my life formulating my ideals and notions on this blog lol go educate yourself, take some time for introspective thought and, perhaps, you can articulate your thoughts in matter that is both opinionated yet not demeaning to differing notions (and thus join the plethora of foolhardy imbeciles willing to discard a couple of minutes in exchange for vocalizing their ideals on music, social events situations and the world were are forced to co-inhabit)

Maybe this is why he doesn't do songs about drug dealin' like he did in the past. "Recognize where we come from In my day mayne, I did a lil sumn sumn They like, how come you don’t rap that? Cause that’s a backtrack and I ain’t tryna backpack I’m only movin forward, homie that’s that Direction, a lotta shawtys lack that"
Then again, those lyrics are from some of his new stuff, that you might have only listened to once and said Lupe has fallen off.

You see prior to LASERS I had a lyrics over anything mentality. But after listening to LASERS I realized that I wrong. That is what LASERS taught me. Music isn't about the beat, it isn't about the lyrics, isn't about delivery/flow, it isn't about the chorus/hook. It's about all these things coming into one. None of those things alone can survive without the other. And you sir are correct. I am among the people that listened to coming up once and dismissed it as trash due to the beat and hook. If Lupe wants people to dismiss his message because he he wants to rap of pop/club beats then so be it.
I don't think that Lupe has fallen off. Especially after hearing his Food and Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Intro. That Intro is what reminds me of the Lupe Fiasco that inspired me after hearing The Cool and F&L. I know you think we are hating Lupe because we are jealous of Lupe's success, but that is certainly not the case. I yet to see a Lupe song that matches anything on The Cool such as 'Put You On Game' or 'The Coolest' or 'Gotta Eat.' I really do think that anyone that is telling the "haters" to STFU are new fans that never heard F&L and The Cool and if they listen to those albums they never understood what some of the song meant or failed to grasp how incredible and well put together those were. Songs off the Cool and F&L were played in English classes of Universities. Songs off LASERS are played by... I think you get the point. F&L and The Cool are works of Art. LASERS is not.
Thumbs up to Lupe for making music people can relate to. Fuck haters, it's all about the message. 'My only promise is that I'll never ruin the young' - not that he'll never stray from boombap beats. I swear to God y'all would be happy if he went all Eminem-style lyrical i.e. rapping about murder and bitches on a boombap beat cos thats all you guys see. Face value.
Bottom line..some people no matter what lupe does will hold it as gold..Nothing is above criticism. If u cant give ur favorite artist constructive criticism, then he/she will always think that what they do is great..even when its not. U noticed has lupe EVER said anything criticizing his musical output? And or song? NO..Why? he simply thinks everything he does is right. when its not. Lasers was not a good album to his standards. Beyond that, whats up with this dubstep music? different/experimental doesnt equal dopeness. This is wack. Am i the only one noticing his rhymes are watered-down? IMO he has fallen off. Lupe the person-good..Lupe the musician-very average. He has actually turned me away from his music. That intro to F&L 2...will not be there..if it is it will be changed just state run radio was. You keep having faith in Lupe if u want. I know better. This guy is turning pop, he recently said he is the "nicest" MC. Not only cocky(which he never was) but incorrect. If this song is an indication of the best MC. lololol then hip hop is dead
Can't we show some tolerance towards others opinions lol let them be, no amount of bickering is going to change someone's ideals. Unless you are personally targeted, demonstrate tolerance. Everybody is entitled to thoughts, so let's refrain from imposing on another's right to exist happily...
Is it Lupe's best? No. Is it still Lupe? Yes. Positive Message? Yep. Lyrical Mindf**k? Yep. Beat? Okay. Flow? Not his usual yet still awesome. Overall. 8.5/10 for Lupe.
Lupe has changed. He isn't the same person he was 5 years ago. As he changes, so does his music. If you don't like it, fine. Say you don't like it, don't troll and go on a rant like you just lost a family member. Voice your opinion like an intelligent human being. Not like a someone who just got dumped.

HD: That was an amazing post. I loved how you wrote satirically to point out the flaws in the arguments of those that want the "old, conscious" Lupe back. Weel done sir. At least that's what I assume you were going for...
BlackFrost, thank you. I appreciate your posts very much. You have organized my thoughts and feelings (and i'm sure those of many others) in a very articulated and intellectual manner. Thank you very much for your input. Your thoughts regarding the regression of Lupe Fiasco's music/art are IDENTICAL to mine. It is incredibly upsetting to say the absolute least. In 2007, if you had told me that Lupe would go down this path, I would have NEVER believed you.
I don't know who or what Lupe is trying to be at this point, but he is not being himself. All I can say is that the extremely intelligent, articulate, insightful, imaginative, positively driven, NATURALLY nonconformist POET that we once knew is not the same person we see jumping up and down on the stage screaming "i don't wanna care right know."
^^everyone who is posting negative things need to stop being lame and support Lupe. If you don't like it, keep it to yourself. No need in sparking ridiculous debates about how he's fallen of or whatever. Y'all say he's changed because of one album, and a song off one mixtape. His good outweighs his not so good by hundreds of thousands of lightyears so why hate off of so little evidence. Getcha mind right.
It must be impossible to display any sort of tolerance for differing opinions. Lu is not above criticism, no human being is. Anish is simply articulating his thoughts on this matter. So, there is no need to treat someone like a social pariah on a blog.... and for what? Because they don't appreciate a song as much as you? Because an album you enjoy doesn't fit their musical tastes? Opinion is subjective, it is not concrete though it may have some factual grounding. The best way to illustrate disdain towards an ideal or notion that you don't like (that isn't harmful or detrimental to someone's health/well-being) is to acknowledge it's existence then ignore it. Some people need to relax and allow others to think... or would you prefer uniform thoughts?
^ *kanyeshrug* definitely not civil lol just really... interesting how acknowledging an opposing opinion is beyond most people. It's pretentious as all hell to be so condescending to another person on such a subjective topic, but whatever. If senseless bickering keeps the community content, keep it up xD
^^ And once Ash realized that he couldn't catch them all, there was only the Rage! LOL you seem a bit more emotionally invested in this than anybody, getting all salty and whatnot... relax, broski. No need for the hostility haha
lupe can dish out criticism but cant take it...lets get seantherobot in here to debate..and see if he is bias or objective..i know he runs this blog..so we will put it to the test
I understand if someone said lupe was "falling off" if they heard that song with him and jay sean (which i still liked) but to hear say it after listening to this song?
Your obviously no longer a fan of lupe and unlike him you have lost your way.
This is a remix of a remix. Bassnectar remixed lights by Ellie goulding. Lupe just remixed it again.. so you're right when you say this beat isn't his or like is old shit. He didn't do anything more than lay some lyrics down and call it his own. Lol.
lets see if this is hot 1st comment
ReplyDeleteOHHHHH! GLORYYYYYYYYY!
ReplyDelete^FU THIS IS FIREEEE
ReplyDeleteI'll be playing it though for a while haha
ReplyDeleteYeah, your right, probably should hate on free material. Verse is nice, but the beat...

ReplyDeleteThis is not what I was hoping for I was looking for Lupe to go back to a raw hip hop sound with straight bars. This is okay but the beat is annoying and takes away from the lyrics.
ReplyDeleteSpit hot fire like dylan on chapelle skit.
ReplyDeletemeh...
ReplyDeleteThis is straight Hip Hop/Dubstep mix finally. It's okay.
ReplyDeleteLupe go back to your roots, you need to be #occupying the studio not wallstreet
ReplyDeleteDopeness.
ReplyDeleteYes
ReplyDeleteBest thing to do in any situation is to NOT get yourself psyched for one thing because, as it usually is in life . . . you won't get your wish. Especially not when it's coming from ANOTHER person, making his OWN music/message, with OTHER people helping him.

"Touch more souls/soles than a dance floor."
ReplyDeleteI love it! This is amazing, quit hatin'...hatersss.
Somebody actually said the lyrics were good lol. he is falling........albeit pretty fast lol...its not hating either...grow up..I am a human being with an opinion who is very knowledgeable of lupe and his music..its wack...nobody wants to say so because the put lupe on a pedestal..he is a MC..MC's make music...this particular "song" is wack..for many reasons....he is essentially talking about nothing 90 percent of the song..and it lacks his creativity..That Food and liquor 2 intro...dope....but I promise u that wont be on that album...remember what i said
ReplyDelete"talking about nothing?"
ReplyDeleteoh geez...crazy guy.
Hrm, well, I never recall understanding everything Lupe is saying on my first listen neither . . . from F&L to now. Only listening once and writing it off is quite a disservice to every dual meaning, metaphor and simile packed into this four minute package.
ReplyDeleteUnless, of course, it truly just makes you sick to your stomach hearing "New Lu".
ReplyDeleteThe Greek Black Jesus said...
ReplyDeleteThis dude is the goat along with common ghost nas rae thought pac....
People hattin right away saying its pop or not like his old mixtapes....yea he grew but the material is still the same listen to the lyrics mang....
at the anonymous hating stop being a lil B*tch hiding behind that guise just come out and say it. i gotta admit those lyrics were dope i didnt understand half those references made.
ReplyDeleteI can't be the only one who sees a somewhat Jay-Z, Watch The Throne-ish type flow particularly with the minor pauses in between lines. The beat made my draw this comparison too.
ReplyDeleteIt is an alright song, nothing to write home about, at least on a Lupe scale.
ReplyDeleteFact: lupe's worst lyrics >>>>>> majority of what's out....NOT debatable....oh and yes, I'm including lasers....
ReplyDeleteThis is nice. Real fans always appreciate new material. Not to mention is it me or does it sound like lupe freestyled this track? I'm sure that would shut the haters up.
ReplyDeleteLyrics are actually better than most of Lasers, but I definitely don't think this sounds like Lupe. I'm just tired of how upfront everything he writes is. He keeps using this same slow and boring flow. No metaphors either?...Lupe just keeps spiraling downward.
ReplyDeletePeople on the internet hate on everything so going on other websites and reading a bunch of hater's by occupation opinions is pointless. And to person who said something about the "NSX" line, you might want to think about the line a lil bit and remember what Lupe is known for..
ReplyDelete"Funny is how im only sick, if you never catch a thing"
ReplyDelete"Funny is how im only sick, if you never catch a thing"
ReplyDelete^+1 to anon on that quote. Lu knows.
"Soooo, what are you going to stand for?"
ReplyDeleteI like it it. It grew on me.
ReplyDeleteGoddamn, I found this site like 3 days ago and have been prowling for a while.. This is my first comment.
ReplyDeleteWTF is wrong with the haters out there? Its as if you guys make a conscious effort to be stupid :/
Stop bullshitting yourselves. This is a MIXTAPE track. Not as heavily polished as a record track, but this shit is still DOPE as hell.
"Why he so rebellious? Up front with his realness.. They wanna be Fiascos' and reproduce his values."

Yes!! Sickness ness ness ness, well said :)
ReplyDeletemeh wasn't wat i was expecting but aye thats life this is average i was hoping for more revolutionary content or more intelectual content period (with a name like friend of the people shouldn't be any room for any fillers such as this to much going on in the world to talk about) but i'll hold my full critique until the entire project comes out
ReplyDeletehhaha dawg lyrics are dope but beat is garbage. dubstep?? really?
ReplyDeletenam man, this nigga lost his touch. if f&l2 is anything like this, then......
Np @ ihadsome :P
ReplyDeleteI like this site. Think I'll be coming here more often :D
""if f&l2 is anything like this, then......""
ReplyDeletethen... Lupe has definitely fallen off. Lupe said he was going back to what got him here in the first place with F&L 2 and if F&L 2 sounds anything like this track then oh boy...
“Funny how I'm only sick when you never catch a thing”
ReplyDeleteLupe's message to all the haters ^__^
Great track man. I love it. I like his commentry about the Ghetto/poor people aspirations. Plus, female identity.
ReplyDeleteFirst line:
"Soooo, what are you going to stand for?"
Most ironic line:
“Funny how I'm only sick when you never catch a thing”
While I hope the rest of FOTP has more of a feel of his old mixtapes, I am not the least bit disappointed with this. The first "single" is going to the the most "mainstream". FIRE!
ReplyDelete"They wanna be Fiascos' reproduce his failures."
ReplyDeleteUgh this beat. Not a huge fan. I agree with others that it takes away from the lyrics.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of lyrics:
http://rapgenius.com/Lupe-fiasco-liightwork-lyrics
Ehhh the beat takes away from his lyrics....I just hope the whole mixtape isn't like this. He needs to get back on his F&L flow w/ the beats & lyrics
ReplyDeleteBeat is okay. Lyrics are supreme. FnF Up!©
ReplyDeleteFunny how people complain about the beat not being original, yet EOTS were composed of other beats and was acclaimed as amazing. Whatever, love Lupe, digging the lyrics, and can't wait for what's in store on FOTP!!!
ReplyDeletehahhaa peep this site breaks down lupes lyrics ... http://rapgenius.com/Lupe-fiasco-lightwork-lyrics.... like lupe has really fallen off? ha
ReplyDeleteStyle is different...meaning is still the same...this guys amazing
ReplyDeleteLUPE FELL OFF... lupe needs to occupy with NEW PRODUCERS!!!
ReplyDeleteFunny how Lu can't do anything different without people presumptuously stating he's lost his savvy lol liked the production, lyrics were on point but Lu... you gotta flow better than that.
ReplyDeleteSounds like he did it off the top....which isn't a bad thing. Whatever the outcome, hands down one of the most creative artist. FNF up.
ReplyDelete""Funny how I'm always sick if you never catch a thing
ReplyDeleteArgue with your friends over what really the record means""
""Back and forth -
a balanced course,
with professor's refereeing
Why he so rebellious?
Up-front with his realness?
They wanna be Fiasco's, reproduce his Failures
Emperor is his alias,
but not Marcus Aurelius
This is more like Sparta: kick you down a well, kid""
ReplyDelete"My only promise is I'll never ruin the young"
lol dreading this guy/dreds in the sky
ReplyDeleteHe's only sick when you didn't catch a thing. That line was nice.
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing song, great beat and lyrics.
ReplyDeleteMan this joint got that epic feel 2 it its way more than just music and words this is a SOUNDTRACK TO A REVOULTION!!!! How can u not feel this shit??? (MOre Than music yaw more than music)
ReplyDeleteI love it but kinda wish lupe would have just straight murdered it. Like hardcore straight kill a track status
ReplyDeletethis aint bad. lu on behalf of prop joe of BMore and the eastern- we approve
ReplyDeleteUh oh we got Bmore in the house, wazup slim I'm from Bmore myself, shouts out to lupe on the track,he goes in
ReplyDeletesaid I love this song Lupe keep doing what you're doing people always going to have some negative remarks and hate because they wish they could be you especially when you're doing something good so dust the haters off they can kiss your black ass like my momma told me worry when people stop talking love you bro keep doing what makes you happy some people never satisfied and I voted for you on People's Choice Award and by the way this is L.Davis
ReplyDeletePeople this is his "lightwork" not his "hardwork" and its still an amazin.
ReplyDelete"funny that I'm only sick when you never catch a thing"
ReplyDelete....EVERYONE WAS LISTENING TO YOU BEFORE.
ReplyDeleteWill the disappointment ever end? I'm inches away from not being a Fiasco fan anymore. At least not his new stuff.
ReplyDeletemake it stop? i agree with most of the people here. lupe is just not the same anymore...
ReplyDeleteDude whay all the hate? It's new Lupe material and a mixtape release date! I'll bet a majority the people who are complaining about him dumbing down the lyrics haven't even listened 3 times yet. This is pretty good as far as wordplay goes. Not like Game Time or 1st & 15th is Back, or anything...but still nothing to bitch about.
ReplyDeleteI like the track its different.Maybe Lu going a different route....
ReplyDeleteOkay I'll give Lu the benefit of the doubt.
ReplyDeleteThis is suppose to be Lupe's 'light' work correct? Can't wait for him to go HARD.
Please Lupe, please go HARD on this mixtape. I need you to go IN man. I need you to make all these other rappers seem like soulja boy.
I need that 2 man pig pun Lupe.
I need that 1 man slaughter house Lupe.
I need that 2 album Jay-Z Lupe.
I need that 1 nigga Wu-tang Lupe.
I need that young and hungry Mos Def Lupe.
I need that conscious rappin Lil Wayne Lupe.
PLEASE body the mixtape!
That beat will give you a headache, and it makes it extremely hard to understand what he's saying. Man its tough being a Lupe fan post Lasers.
ReplyDeleteI cant get jiggy ta dis shit! try again muda fucka!!
ReplyDeletewow this "we want old lupe" is just as hilarious as people want the "old" linkin park back. its best that artists work on new projects rather than sticking with their old work or else you won't be calling F&L a classic if you keep hearing the same style. if you're truly a fan, then accept this NEW and FREE music. after all Lupe is the Friend of the People
ReplyDeletestop hating. his lyrics are on point. no, its not failure, not lupe the killer, not pop pop but its also not lasers. find me a rap song this year by a relevant artist that is better lyrically then hate
ReplyDeleteImagine what bs people would say if LightWork was replaced with "The National Anthem". These people nowadays just care for how the song "sounds" like...open your fucking eyes
ReplyDeleteT-Unit
ReplyDeleteMan this guys amazing...the word play is ridiculos...
Different styles but still the same smart lu...slr ruthless
why is everyone crediting this hook and "sound" to Lupe?? Um...Lights has BEEN a song and this bassnectar rmx has BEEN out......
ReplyDeletethat said..dope lyrics, booooooring flow. I expected him to go ham on a bassnectar dubstep track...especially one this sick but naw...he went to sleep instead
Well the song is free so I can't complain, but he's released better free music. It would be amazing if there were more songs like SLR and BMF
ReplyDelete87 comment mad ?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI've been a fan since 2006.
ReplyDeleteI read some analyses of this track and its shocking how wrong some people are... I mean its not like my man went "Dumb It Down" on this track. Its called LIGHTWORK.
ReplyDeleteThe part where he says, "While we waiting for that compromise, proceed with a cautious eye" He is referring to the struggles of the Palestinian people in Palestine.
ReplyDeletessiiiiiiickkkkk..... love it.. btw, genius pic of lupe!!!
ReplyDeleteFor me the best line in this song represents how most of us feel about the real Lupe and he is real Lupe in this song even though it is "Lightwork" my favorite line is when he says
ReplyDelete"I'll never human the sung lyrics in a spirit thats superhuman to some"
Im convinced people can't separate lupe the person from his music.
ReplyDeleteI don't have time to read all these comments. With that being said song is actually kinda dope!

ReplyDeleteThank you very much for writing this because this is EXACTLY how I feel.
ReplyDelete^ THIS
ReplyDeleteThis song is amazing now that I actually focused on the lyrics. People just don't like the beat.
ReplyDeleteThis is hot, outta here if you think otherwise.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time, I try to abstain from denouncing an artist and I honestly believe that Lupe still has the ability to create classic rap music that conveys a positive music in an intelligent and uniquely articulated manner, but Anish and the Anonymous above him/her are actually correct and vocalized my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteSomeone is probably going to spazz on me for this and allow me to reiterate that I do not believe lupe has "fell off" (look at Eminem for the definition of this), but ALL of Lu's work from the Cool and back was both impactful and subversive.
*positive message
ReplyDelete*that and rapper instead if thy and tapper lol damn phone
ReplyDeleteSongs grown on me...been listening to it for the past couple days & I'm starting to respect the beat & all. A- overall on song.
ReplyDeleteI want Lupe from 2007 and before back:
ReplyDeleteHe was so pure with great songs about how good he was at moving cocaine, heroin and crack. Songs like Failure, Didn't U Know, Lupe the Killer, Absolute freestyle, Fast Money (this is one of my favorite line in the song "Where we tip into Chi-Town if you cook a key you will see
If you chop the nickels that you can get a drop and a box of pistols
Have to get it cocked so you can not get little").
ReplyDeleteLupe is fire!!!!!
Lupe needs to make Hater Hop 2 on this mixtape
ReplyDeletewhy is that every time he comes out with a song theres people who write huge paragprahs bitching bout how he changed and shit get a life
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of all the paragraph-ers I would like to offer my sincerest apologies.
ReplyDelete*manner
ReplyDeleteGo read my posts in this... and you'll see how much you just FAILED lol congratulations on being presumptuous, kid

Maybe this is why he doesn't do songs about drug dealin' like he did in the past.
"Recognize where we come from
In my day mayne, I did a lil sumn sumn
They like, how come you don’t rap that?
Cause that’s a backtrack and I ain’t tryna backpack
I’m only movin forward, homie that’s that
Direction, a lotta shawtys lack that"
Then again, those lyrics are from some of his new stuff, that you might have only listened to once and said Lupe has fallen off.
I think Lupe is the only rapper that could kill this beat like he did. He's still the best.
ReplyDelete--
I will continue to put Lupe number 1 til the death of me.

Face value.
ReplyDeleteBottom line..some people no matter what lupe does will hold it as gold..Nothing is above criticism.
ReplyDelete^ Stop being lame and go home and go listen to some wacka flocka or somethin.
ReplyDeleteCan't we show some tolerance towards others opinions lol let them be, no amount of bickering is going to change someone's ideals. Unless you are personally targeted, demonstrate tolerance. Everybody is entitled to thoughts, so let's refrain from imposing on another's right to exist happily...
ReplyDeleteIs it Lupe's best? No. Is it still Lupe? Yes. Positive Message? Yep. Lyrical Mindf**k? Yep. Beat? Okay. Flow? Not his usual yet still awesome. Overall. 8.5/10 for Lupe.
ReplyDeleteLupe has changed. He isn't the same person he was 5 years ago. As he changes, so does his music. If you don't like it, fine. Say you don't like it, don't troll and go on a rant like you just lost a family member. Voice your opinion like an intelligent human being. Not like a someone who just got dumped.

not my favorite rapper anymore nuff said
ReplyDeleteHD: That was an amazing post. I loved how you wrote satirically to point out the flaws in the arguments of those that want the "old, conscious" Lupe back. Weel done sir. At least that's what I assume you were going for...
ReplyDeleteBlackFrost, thank you.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who or what Lupe is trying to be at this point, but he is not being himself. All I can say is that the extremely intelligent, articulate, insightful, imaginative, positively driven, NATURALLY nonconformist POET that we once knew is not the same person we see jumping up and down on the stage screaming "i don't wanna care right know."
this is okay at best smh I can't even call him a favorite anymore =/
ReplyDelete^^everyone who is posting negative things need to stop being lame and support Lupe.
ReplyDeleteIt must be impossible to display any sort of tolerance for differing opinions.
ReplyDeleteSome people need to relax and allow others to think... or would you prefer uniform thoughts?
*its
ReplyDelete^^Lame. Stop trying to be the sites referee.
ReplyDelete*facepalm* well if you want a zoo instead of a blog, so be it. It's just unnecessary and childish
ReplyDeleteI dont think you guys realize how hard he went on this song yet, but you will!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #FotP
ReplyDeleteIts not a zoo BlackFrost
ReplyDeletegood god lupe what is this
ReplyDelete^ *kanyeshrug* definitely not civil lol just really... interesting how acknowledging an opposing opinion is beyond most people. It's pretentious as all hell to be so condescending to another person on such a subjective topic, but whatever. If senseless bickering keeps the community content, keep it up xD
ReplyDeleteI like how you are using those unecessary words to sound more intelligent than you truly are.
ReplyDeleteThat's just how I talk lol sorry if that irritates you but... *kanyeshrug*
ReplyDeleteHah. It doesnt irritate me at all.
ReplyDelete^^ And once Ash realized that he couldn't catch them all, there was only the Rage! LOL you seem a bit more emotionally invested in this than anybody, getting all salty and whatnot... relax, broski. No need for the hostility haha
ReplyDeletelupe can dish out criticism but cant take it...lets get seantherobot in here to debate..and see if he is bias or objective..i know he runs this blog..so we will put it to the test
ReplyDeleteBeat selection does NOT mean your "falling off" anybody that heard the lyrics in this song and says hes "falling off" is a moron.
ReplyDelete"Funny how I'm only sick if you never catch a thing"
"I know that dont mix like Ecstacy and Ketomine"
"They want to be Fiasco's, reproduce his Failures"
"Now I know that's contradiction, wants and needs in competition but its hard to stay on point with such extremes in opposition"
"Touched more Soles [Souls] then a dance-floor"
"Argue with your friends over what really the record means, back and forth about its coarse with Professors refereeing"
If you think he fell off, your retarded

Well put sir. ^^
ReplyDeleteI understand if someone said lupe was "falling off" if they heard that song with him and jay sean (which i still liked) but to hear say it after listening to this song?
ReplyDeleteYour obviously no longer a fan of lupe and unlike him you have lost your way.
This is a remix of a remix. Bassnectar remixed lights by Ellie goulding. Lupe just remixed it again.. so you're right when you say this beat isn't his or like is old shit. He didn't do anything more than lay some lyrics down and call it his own. Lol.
