Im not too sure im clear on Lupe's point here... maybe someone can help me out. Was the arugment that he was making that women should cover up? not critizing...seriously just want to know.
^^^No he isn't you should try to read the title, it says Women in Society and Hip Hop, so he was expanding the conversation that this problem of exploitation of women in hip hop and media isn't any thing new and was something that existed for hundreds and thousands of years, he was just keeping on topic, and getting to the root of the problem and I commend him for it. So before you resort to calling names, why don't you read the topic next time, because it makes you seem dumb and retarded.
Interesting conversation I would love to see the whole session. I wonder if he would somehow tie up everything he's saying by discussing the importance of religion, hopefully he brings up the respect he has for muslim women who covers themselves in this society.
I understand and respect the direction Lupe is going in. Its my personal belief that National Geographic is a neo-colonical, culturally appropriating watered down publication at best.
So its a perfect example of the sexual exploitation of women as these tribeswomen are being exotified and masquerated (likely with marginal or not any consent)as objects to be "studied" by westerners.
There is something highly disturbing about a white male entering a villiage uninvited and snapping shots of the bare-chested black women who reside in said village to be distrubted for global consumption...and, let's not forget, profit. Sex sells. It sells knowledge, messages, products, you name it.
but...I accept a challenge and correction if im wrong.
Lupe says the darnest things! But to br fair, I wasn't feeling what the lady beside Lu was saying. I think its kind of hypocritical for a female to say the 'role of male' should be this and get piss when a male says or infers the 'role of a female'.
Some of you seem to be impressed and/or amused with Lupe's use of the word "tities" ... heres why you shouldn't be:

I just thought I'd share that for those who are not absolutely REPLUSED by Lupe's use of this word. Hopefully this has changed yoru minds.
We women need to recognize that our bodies have been colonized and commodified in this society so severly that we have internalized these masogenistic dipictions of us.
Dear sisters, honor yourselves and don't use the media as a reference point for the image of your own body. They will distort our mirrors until we purchase their distored brand of beauty at the price of our souls.
I think Toni Blackman was simply speaking to the misappropriation of the female struggle by some men who should be acting as allies rather than pretending to understand the struggle of womanhood. Only a woman can speak to this since only a woman has lived it..
Same way only a mother/father can speak of struggles surrounding parenthood since all else who are not experiencing that role directly can only speculate based on what they've seen or been told.
Toni was merely outlining that we (whether we are men or women)do not have the authority to be a voice to a community we do not belong to, in turn depriving them of space to have a voice of their own.
This philosophy is not new. Its the backbone of critical race theory, and has been echoed by heros such as Malcolm X.

To know the history of a word is important. It was derived with sexism. The same was "nigger" was derived in racism. Meaning have changed but why continue using a word when you learn what it was really meant to be. aside from that it really sounds ignorant to use it. esp after learning the true origins.

Im the original anon that posted about the etymology of 'titties'. I just wanted to let you know that the only two posts (before this one) that I've posted were the etym. one and the response to femaleanon after that (I guess its hard to tell when im posting anynomously :P)...
So I never called Lupe "ignorant" nor would I. I don't really even use that word ("ignorant") towards people for fear that it is true about myself.. and I've found that it often is.
I wasn't even really saying that his use of the word "titties" reduces his point.. just sheading some light on research I did after feeling disconcerted about his use of that word and not knowing why. Felt like it might benefit others to share. Whats the use of knowing something if we don't share that knowledge, right?
