Am I the only one who doesn't understand the reference. Seeing that it's Drake, it's probably just too stupid for me too understand. But anything involving Lupe is cool
"I started a new race, it's funny ***WHEN*** you think a ni**a blew up after Lupe."
I for the life of me don't know what the hell that means.
My guess is that he's saying he started something new and blew up doing that "new" thing(whatever that is... I guess he's referring to "rap singing" or "emotional rap" which isn't really new at all... I guess he made it popular? I dunno).
He's also saying that it's funny when you think back in retrospect that he was able to do this after the Greatest rapper Of All Time in Lupe really shook the rap game with his "breath of fresh air" bars. It's kind of unthinkable that someone would be able to be shake the game up of the magnitude that Lupe did so I guess it's funny that he was able to do it.
Speaking of thinking back, this just reminded me of how Atlantic fucked up Lupe's career. I really wonder where Lu would be now if he had released the real LASERS back in 09 and followed it up with his remaining 2 albums left on his contract and released them naturally with no Atlantic holding the albums hostage or interfering with it in anyway. I personally think he'd be considered a living legend among ***ALL*** hip-hop heads today had he had his way.
I hope he's not saying that he's leading the new lyrical resurgence in hip-hop.. as it's often said that Lupe is a frontrunner in that discussion. Drake's not even in that class.. especially after that "Started From The Bottom" garbage track & video.
He's saying it's funny that he is more well known than Lupe, even though Lupe blew up before him. I don't think he's taking a shot at Lupe or anything, but I'm pretty sure that's what the reference means.
We all know Drake started from the middle not from the bottom. He was on a nationally broadcasted tv show Degrassi, Drake featuring Drake, half of his songs/singles feature big name rappers.
Do you ever hear Lupe having features? Of course Drake is going to be big for making songs for women, RnB isn't hip hop.
Not saying Drake won't earn his spot in hip-hop in the future, but it is too early now. Wait until you drop another album or two.
He is NOT disrespecting Lupe in any way. He has respected Lupe for a long time, he had mix tape Lupe track on his first mix tape. He is referring to how its crazy how someone (him) blew up after Lupe, as Lupe is a lyrical genius.
Us Toronto people don't disrespect people like that.
I think he means in another way, that he's amazed he got as far as he did after Lupe blew up and set the bar so damn high lyrically. Also could be the timeline thing too.
Wow, people. He's reffering to the line Lupe says on his track Put You On Game. "Don't you know that I run this place and begun this race". And yeah... He's bigging his self up.
I think he's just tryna say that nobody else was really making a major change in the game after Lupe came out in '06. if anything he's giving Lupe major props on this track.
ya know I was kind of thinking the same thing like the Anonymous above me said. I was waiting for someone else to say it first. On "Put You On Game," Lu said "Don't you know that I run this place, and i've begun this race. Must I rerun this pace. I'm the reason it's become this way" and then that Drake line just makes me think about it lol. It may be reaching but hey just an opinion lol
I started a new race. Guys Triple Entendre here. First, "Don't you know that I begun this race" - from Put You On Game. Then the double entendre. "Car movin at top gear, jeremy clarkson." - Lupe is so fast you better get behind this homie! Lupe moves so fast, he adds onto this in "Still Speedin'" Also, we've heard his top speed super duper rap in "Go Go Gadget Flow" but we did hear him go off in "Stil SPeedin" Lupe say - CLUTCH FULL OF VICTORY NEVA LET IT SLIP THRU MY GEAR BOX!
sERIOUSLY drippy even know he behind lupe and if he wanted to ever doubt it i seen the video of him tryna start a fight and bein held back by lupe. He was literally behind lupe at that point. He blew up w/ anger. Triple Entendre right there.
Lastly, Quad Entendre? Drips was a parapeligick and couldn't walk on his soap opera and was in the wheely chair he also torn his acl on stage.
Not a drake fan at all but this is straight fire
ReplyDeleteSean change the line to:
Delete"I started a new race, it's funny ***WHEN*** you think a ni**a blew up after Lupe."
That is what he said and yeah it makes a difference.
Am I the only one who doesn't understand the reference. Seeing that it's Drake, it's probably just too stupid for me too understand. But anything involving Lupe is cool
ReplyDeleteIt's actually
Delete"I started a new race, it's funny ***WHEN*** you think a ni**a blew up after Lupe."

Fuck Atlantic 4 Life.
Yeah, I don't really get it either tbh
ReplyDeleteMaybe it is from the "Outro" on Lupe's first album. Lupe gives a shout-out to Drake right after Wiz.
DeleteI hope he's not saying that he's leading the new lyrical resurgence in hip-hop.. as it's often said that Lupe is a frontrunner in that discussion. Drake's not even in that class.. especially after that "Started From The Bottom" garbage track & video.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what he's referencing though..
"Dont you know that i begun this race" - Put you on game
ReplyDeleteU guys don't get it
ReplyDeleteIt's simple
The biggest person who had an enormous hype in hip hop after 50 cent was lupe fiasco
And after luor, it was drake
He's saying it's funny that he is more well known than Lupe, even though Lupe blew up before him. I don't think he's taking a shot at Lupe or anything, but I'm pretty sure that's what the reference means.
ReplyDeleteor maybe that the fact he won the grammy doesn't make him better than lupe
ReplyDeletehe's saying its funny he was able to blow up after lupe changed the game, cuz lupe was influenced so much by lupe da gawd
ReplyDeleteDrake is one hella ugly mofo though.
ReplyDeleteNowat hes sayin os dat Lupe wasnt the one who oppened the door to their kind of hip hop. He sayin he blew up as an orgional
ReplyDeletei think he's saying he blew up before lu even though most people think that lupe arrived first. who knows, i could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteeither way, lupe > everybody.
We all know Drake started from the middle not from the bottom. He was on a nationally broadcasted tv show Degrassi, Drake featuring Drake, half of his songs/singles feature big name rappers.

cuz you know...having Jay-Z on your debut album doesn't count as a feature or anything...
DeleteIt was a shoutout, not a call out..
ReplyDeleteHe was saying that Lupe completely changed the game but drake still claimed fame even after how great lupe was.
lupe the lyrical god <3
He is NOT disrespecting Lupe in any way. He has respected Lupe for a long time, he had mix tape Lupe track on his first mix tape. He is referring to how its crazy how someone (him) blew up after Lupe, as Lupe is a lyrical genius.
ReplyDeleteUs Toronto people don't disrespect people like that.
^^^Thank you^^^ People stop reaching. (Did they forget on last year how he told Lupe how much he respected him?)
DeleteYeah he's not disrespecting. He's referring to how is it even possible for someone to get big (him) after Lupe, as Lupe is an amazing rapper.
ReplyDeleteDrake= meh
ReplyDeletethis track tho
ReplyDeleteAnyone else hear: "I started a new race, it's funny WHEN you think a ni**a blew up after Lupe."?
ReplyDeleteI started a new race.
It's funny...when you think, a nigga blew up after Lupe.
drake is hoe
ReplyDeletedrake is a hoe.
DeleteI think he means in another way, that he's amazed he got as far as he did after Lupe blew up and set the bar so damn high lyrically. Also could be the timeline thing too.

ReplyDeleteI think he's just tryna say that nobody else was really making a major change in the game after Lupe came out in '06. if anything he's giving Lupe major props on this track.
ReplyDeleteIts an attack on Lupe Fiasco..Listen to put you on game
ReplyDeleteYou reaching...
