Am I the only one who doesn't understand the reference. Seeing that it's Drake, it's probably just too stupid for me too understand. But anything involving Lupe is cool

I for the life of me don't know what the hell that means.
My guess is that he's saying he started something new and blew up doing that "new" thing(whatever that is... I guess he's referring to "rap singing" or "emotional rap" which isn't really new at all... I guess he made it popular? I dunno).
He's also saying that it's funny when you think back in retrospect that he was able to do this after the Greatest rapper Of All Time in Lupe really shook the rap game with his "breath of fresh air" bars. It's kind of unthinkable that someone would be able to be shake the game up of the magnitude that Lupe did so I guess it's funny that he was able to do it.
Speaking of thinking back, this just reminded me of how Atlantic fucked up Lupe's career. I really wonder where Lu would be now if he had released the real LASERS back in 09 and followed it up with his remaining 2 albums left on his contract and released them naturally with no Atlantic holding the albums hostage or interfering with it in anyway. I personally think he'd be considered a living legend among ***ALL*** hip-hop heads today had he had his way.
Fuck Atlantic 4 Life.

DeleteI hope he's not saying that he's leading the new lyrical resurgence in hip-hop.. as it's often said that Lupe is a frontrunner in that discussion. Drake's not even in that class.. especially after that "Started From The Bottom" garbage track & video.

He's saying it's funny that he is more well known than Lupe, even though Lupe blew up before him. I don't think he's taking a shot at Lupe or anything, but I'm pretty sure that's what the reference means.

We all know Drake started from the middle not from the bottom. He was on a nationally broadcasted tv show Degrassi, Drake featuring Drake, half of his songs/singles feature big name rappers.

Not saying Drake won't earn his spot in hip-hop in the future, but it is too early now. Wait until you drop another album or two.

He is NOT disrespecting Lupe in any way. He has respected Lupe for a long time, he had mix tape Lupe track on his first mix tape. He is referring to how its crazy how someone (him) blew up after Lupe, as Lupe is a lyrical genius.
