As Triangle Area fans may recall, Lupe Fiasco was to head Duke University's Last Day of Class (LDOC) festival last year; however, due to the critically acclaimed Glow in the Dark Tour Lupe was double-booked. He requested a raincheck for the Fall.
Because Lupe is very popular amongst Duke's student body, many students were disappointed. The Roots gave a great show instead. Fans were excited when they heard that Lupe gave verbal confirmation of returning Fall 2008.
Fall 2008 came and left without a single performance from the FNF artist. When Duke began planning for LDOC 2009, students excitedly joined Facebook groups requesting Lupe for the line-up again. They expected that the artists would work with LDOC officials and give them the show that never was performed.
This week Gym Class Heroes, Ben Folds, and Girl Talk were revealed as the headline bands for this year's festival. Students are excited, but for some, it is bittersweet.
According to The Chronicle, Meredith Estren (the LDOC Committee Chair) stated the following: "Although Lupe Fiasco was one of the committee's top choices, his verbal promise was nonbinding and bringing him to campus would not have been possible given budget constraints."
