"On Saturday night, I was fortunate enough to witness the greatest concert ever put on by man. Not only was Kanye West out of this world (literally), but his three opening acts, Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D., and Rihanna were all impressive and enjoyable to watch perform. From here on out, I am going to give you a basic synopsis and maybe even some analysis, depending on the act.
Lupe Fiasco:
Unfortunately for Lupe, not many people were in their seats when he first came on stage, nor out on the lawn, but he still rocked the house. Lupe was the only performer who did not have a band, instead Lupe had a DJ in the middle of the stage behind him, but he still got everyone into it. He mainly performed songs from his newest album, entitled "The Cool", but he did include a few tracks from his debut album "Food and Liquor". He did his few hit singles, but the problem I had with Lupe, is that he only finished a few songs. He did clips of most of his songs, which was disappointing, but when you only have 30 minutes to perform, you want to get in as much as possible. Overall, Lupe rocked the stage in the little time he had, and started off the night well.
N.E.R.D.:
Now, for those of you who have never heard of N.E.R.D., our think they are called Nerd, go look them up and listen to the music, because it is unbelievable what they have accomplished, especially with their first album. Their new album, Seeing Sounds, is releasing June 10th, so keep yours eyes out for that. And on to the performance...N.E.R.D. came out with a full band, including two drummers, who were both outstanding. Pharrell and his crew brought the energy, and got the crowd into their performance the second they stepped on stage by playing music that makes you want to jump, or to use a song title off their new album, "Spaz". When they performed "Spaz", everyone in the crowd was jumping up and down, dancing, etc. and so was Chris Brown, who came on stage and put on a show for the fans. Another memorable performance was "Everyone Nose", the first single off of Seeing Sounds. This was a crowd pleaser, and surprisingly, many fans were really into it. These guys clearly had a passion for the music they were performing, and their hypeness (new word, I should get that in the dictionary) seeped into the crowd. They got everyone to clap and dance during their set, and it seemed to be highly rated, and in my mind, they were the best of the three opening acts.
Rihanna:
Before the show, I thought Rihanna's performance would bore me to death, and all I would be thinking about during her set was how amazing Kanye would be. But when she got up there and started performing songs from her newest album, "Good Girl Gone Bad", I was very impressed. She really pleased me, as well as many others at the show when she sung M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" and Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)". It took big guts to do those two songs, but she did an excellent job. Despite wearing some of the weirdest configured outfits I have ever seen, Rihanna had a very solid performance, and was much more enjoyable than I expected her to be. She of course finished with her hit single, "Umbrella", which is an incredible song, even though she didn't write it. All in all, Rihanna was a nice addition to the concert, before Mr. West came to the stage.
Kanye West:
Right before Kanye came on, I was having a conversation with the guy behind me who works over at Clear Channel, and I was telling him how I was content even before Kanye came on. But when the lights dimmed, and finally the time was here, I was happier than ever. My heart rate must've tripled due to excitement. A little computer starts talking to Kanye and says, "Wake up Mr. West", right then and there, every single person in attendance went insane as Kanye got up after lying down on the stage, and started his show off with "Good Morning". Kanye's act was based off a plot that he created. He was on a spaceship and it crashed, and he had to be the one to save the day. Kanye was cocky, but it plays, because that's the type of guy he is. He went on to perform songs that went along with this plot he had built up. He performed every song well, and everyone loved him. After he performed Flashing Lights, Kanye danced around to the fans delight, especially when he pretended to hump the stage. Kanye did 8 songs from Graduation, and 5 songs from both The College Dropout and Late Registration. After performing many upbeat songs, Kanye slowed things down and sung "Hey Mama". Although it was not heard, a giant "aww!" was spreading through the crowd as Kanye showed his emotions while singing this song to his mother, who past away earlier this year. Right after that, Kanye sat and listened to Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'", which was the last thing I expected to here. That song was his motivation to get back up and finish off the show and to make it home again. Despite having so many excellent performances, such as "Champion", "Good Life", and "Touch the Sky", which Kanye and Lupe closed the show with, his most memorable performance was "Stronger". A platform rose off of the stage, and that is where Kanye performed the song, while insane lighting and graphics were going off behind him, and the entire crowd rapping every single word.
Kanye's concert was literally out of this world, and was something I will never forget for the rest of my life. And on the way out, they gave out Kanye's book, "Thank You and You're Welcome", which has been a joy to read to this point. This concert was unbelievable, and if you didn't like it, there must be, or must've been something wrong with you that night. This was a show that will go down in history as one of the best tours, and probably most successful in the 21st century, if not of all-time. Kanye is an innovator, inspirer, and most of all, an excellent performer. If the tour still hasn't hit your city, you better do anything you can do to grab a ticket, because this is one show that you cannot miss."
