Lupe Talks About The Shining Down Leak
what up ya'll...Lupe here...first lemme make a few things very clear.
1. I love the fansite alot i think its dope...i feel flattered that i have so many people interested and in support of my music and the messages that i try to stand for...and not just me but for Hey Champ and the crew and damn near anybody who even resembles me...you gives give them shine and i commend you for that.
2. I DONT LEAK MY OWN RECORDS!!! I'M NOT A FAN OF LEAKING RECORDS OR OF DOWNLOADING!!! My entire first album leaked and possibly cost me from going platinum my first time out as the final estimates of how many people actually downloaded that album illegally was well over half a million. So how do u think i feel that everytime i come to this site where my "fans" are i see you putting up links to download my records???...I dont care about the other sites. I care about where my real fans are supposed to be active. If you come across it and you like it and keep it to yourself thats all cool with me but to make it where as other people are able to download it in a public forum is honestly an insult to me. Especially because of how much i love you guys. that shit is kinda like a slap in the face.
3. FAKE SHORE DRIVES "UNRELEASED" RECORDS COME FROM MY OLD PRODUCERS WHO HAVE MY OLD HARD DRIVES. I DONT AGREE WITH THAT SHIT OR CO-SIGN IT AT ALL ITS THE REASON I STOPPED DOING MIXTAPES AND I TOLD ANDREW THIS WHEN WE MET IN CHICAGO AT THE COCA-COLA TOUR SHOW AND HE THOUGHT I WAS GONNA BE ALL PISSED BUT IT WAS ALL LOVE AND I TOLD HIM I KNOW WHERE HE'S GETTING THOSE RECORDS FROM AND HE AINT GOT WORRY ABOUT ME HE GOTTA WORRY ABOUT ATLANTIC OR ARISTA OR THE PUBLISHERS OF THOSE VERY "UNCLEARED AND UNCLEARABLE" SAMPLES.
Everytime i get the urge to do something new for my fans I go online and see "new unreleased lupe" from 6 years ago and i shrug and just say fuck it. Things like that fuck up the real plans and the mood. You dont just throw out bunch of records for the sake of having a bunch of records out. I dont operate like that as an artist. Some records aren't even meant to come out.
4. When we were talking about who should have first rights to new shit when we do officially "leak" something the only two sites that came up was LupEnd Blog and Nahright. Thats big whether you know that or not. You have a direct relationship with the artist you rock with who puts your name in the hat for everything that involves him online.
5. Someone hacked my email. I was about to fire my entire staff and cut off relationships over shining down leaking last night. Bun B hit me and was like "the records dope" and i was like "what record?" nobody even has it. the only possible explanation is my email chain with the mix studio (which is air tight...the studio that is) was hacked and thats where the record came from.
Lastly, the album is fucking ridiculous. I dont like to brag or shit like that but the album is sooooo fucking crazy at this point 95% done. and its all balls to the wall fire. I have the experience and the freedom now to make what i think will be the best received album of my career.

i heard the CDQ leak, simply amazing, i got chills down my back just listening to it. and i will also be buying the single when it is on itunes and every time i owe someone a birthday present or favor or anything, they will be getting a store bought copy of lasers thats for sure. i have always went out and purchased the album of any artist that i truly respect, and lupe is #1 on that list till the death of it!

At the end of the day, I am truly a fan of your music & I wouldn't do anything I felt harmed your artist.
I feel Ringtone rappers should be worried about mp3's leaking because after that initial single they done. But your an album artist! You music is way more than just a single, so in my mind I am not hurting you, but helping to create a buzz for the upcoming project.
I feel an artist kinda has to embrace or at least let go, when a song is leaked because they can't get it back.
The only thing they can do is stop the next leak from happening in the first place.
With this said, if you want me to remove the link from my site, I will do so gladly.

When I first saw that this blog posted 'Shining Down' and gave a bull shit reason behind it...I was surprised! I knew right from there that yah were feeling yourselves way too much! I did not know any major artist that has officially gicen props to a fan blog like Lupe! Posting that leak was more than a slap in the face! The fact that Lupe addressed yah they way he did truly proves to me how real and humble dude he is! Yah have no idea what you just did!! Lupe right now probably lookin at yah with true skeptism and might question he supposedly "real fans"....Its this type of shit that make artists want to retire...You might have gave him another reason to leave the game sooner. It's like getting robbed by your own family. I am just so disgisted! I mean if I was him and 'We are Lasers' turn into a F&L situation...than I will leave without any notice! If you are ready this Lu, just know that their are fans that are just as pissed as you! And that you dont have to worry about us boot-leggin your shit! The last concert I saw was a Lupe Fiasco show and it blowed my mind so much that me and my friend felt that the show should have cost more (it was only 20 bucks). That's his money man. It is about the music but if it's your job you have to make sure he's getting paid to do his thing. It's support man. I've downloaded things from torrents but I've always gone out and bought Lu's albums. He's that dope.
ReplyDeleteI understand where you guys are coming from with the whole leaking and illegal downloading and what not but if it wasn't for lupe's first album being leaked I wouldn't have even been a fan of lupe. I wouldn't have bought food and liquor just off the singles. I like to listen to a whole project to know if the artist is worth the purchases. I purchased The Cool without even looking for the leak b/c I've respected his work and I KNOW he's gonna always bring the quality. The shining down track leaking could possibly bring more potential buyers or not. I don't think an unfinished leaked track or any leaked material will be any great harm at all to sales. If someone is going to illegally download they're gonna keep on doing it despite you're approval of it. Others out there who I think are very much like my mindset look to hear more from an artist we're not too keen on by downloading a body of work first before we decide if we want to buy into the artist. and live streams aren't even good enough because i don't even have time to listen to that stuff at home most of the time. I do most of my music listening in the car or on school campus. just chill out

i understand artists get bummed out when tracks get leaked like that, but some of that post makes u soun dlike a grumpy old man. You cant fight the future homey - people are going to illegally download shit until it becomes legal. Just bc you had a "half a million downloads" doesnt mean each of those would have been sales. for the most part if people are real fans they will support you anyway. people who dont are just casual listeners or people just checking something out to see if its worth buying. If the product is that hot people will be converted. Look at all the free music Weezy gave out before the carter 3. it only made him bigger - so there is a way to use it to your advantage. You will never be able to stop it so why not figure out how to harness it? Instead of getting all pissy and making ur fans feel like bad stepchildren. maybe thats why you didnt go plat.

I started to think that when I couldn't find a source if Lupe said it was coming out then I thought people was just bullshitting until it leaked then found out about the email hacking. Hopefully Atlantic will LET Lupe do what he needs. Also I hope Lasers doesn't end up like F&L. I was shocked with how great the album was and the success it had. Shoulda went platinum. The cool should be platinum too. Another great album. Maybe 3rd time's the charm with Lasers if everything goes right.

He said he's mad that it leaked like it did in the quality it was and that he doesn't care if we each had it for our personal use for those who have downloaded it like myself but doesn't want us spreading it by putting it up for download anywhere and it also makes more work for the labels anyway to remove it from myspace, youtube, imeem, rapidshare, megaupload, zshare, usershare, mediafire, etc...when it's everywhere so he asked nicely for us not to spread the unfinished version. That's how F&L didn't have the success it should have had. People wanted it so bad that it leaked then half of it had to be redone. The Cool wasn't fully recorded and mastered until a few weeks before the official release. He wants Lasers to be already finished due to LupEND getting postponed then The Great American Rap Album was cancelled and now Lasers. Lasers was supposed to come out this month but it's not and another album was coming in december but doesn't look so either. Plus he's mad over the leaking of his unreleased stuff from people who have his hard drives.
One thing ive learned from lupe is to look beyond the surface .

When Shining Down is released on Itunes I will be 100% buying it. Song is amazing man. You are the best rapper alive.

ReplyDeleteA. The fans didn't put it up, YOU trusted the wrong people. Why punish the people who support you? Relapse leaked and sold mega-numbers, so Lupe's reasoning on this is rather specious.
B. I bought your albums and would pay for the unreleased stuff if that was an option, but seeing as the samples will never be cleared why not give us a free taste?

He goes against some of his main "points" (if you can call them that) on his "LASERS manifesto." isn't going platinum a status symbol? does he not drive nice cars/have a nice house? his grammar is awful, but I guess that can be excused since he's a product of the "universal education system." substance in the place of popularity? he doesn't want to be popular? he doesn't want a platinum record? he doesn't want his normally deep songs to be heard by as many people as possible?

I don't understand why some people are making it seem like Lupe's a bad person for wanting to go platinum. Yah he's got the opportunity to make amazing music for us fans and has the talent to do so, and most of us would be happy with just that. However, that doesn't mean he hasn't any career goals he wants to achieve. Are we to assume that pro athletes should just be happy with the fact that they get to play the sport they love as a career? Hell no, they want to win that trophy or that cup too dammit! So why is Lu the bad guy for wanting to go platinum, one of the greatest achievements a musical artist can get? Nonetheless king, without fans you're just another starving artist trying to figure out why Hip Hop hasn't come to the rescue yet.
