"I can hear 'em through the wall like walk
this way they try to dissuade my thoughts
I'm a slave to myself, don't disobey my boss..."
this way they try to dissuade my thoughts
I'm a slave to myself, don't disobey my boss..."
-B.o.B - "Past My Shades" [ft. Lupe Fiasco]-
Great verse.
ReplyDeleteohhhh, makes sense now
ReplyDeleteand the scott summers line, just made sense this morning while watching xmen lol
Oh snap! I posted the original lyrics way back in a comment. With that correction the lyrics I posted make WAY more sense!
ReplyDeleteWow you just got that line? A lot of people got the 'walk this way' and 'Scott summers' line ways back.
ReplyDeleteLupe's entire verse is insane to me. A lot of people I believe overlooked a lot of his lines. Some say it's one of his weaker verses. That's what I thought initially, but now I think it's one of his better ones.
A Genius Lu'<-----------True That
Exactly.The verse is definitely good.
ReplyDeleteAnd the user 4ziatic said it was weak. I told him it wasn't. So it seems that even to Lupe fans things do go over their heads Lol.
can some1 explain this verse
ReplyDeletesry if im slow
simply amazing
ReplyDelete"Uh, who else, but Lu else
ReplyDeleteyou know I got two belts
the black and the white one,
I begin and I master"
(Karate reference. Lu is saying that once he begins something he masters it quickly. He doesn't go through all the other karate belt colors)
"I see in my eye glasses, but they sayin' what I'm seeing through is false like Ross"
(Rick Ross was accused of wearing fake Louis Vatton shades many times)
"I can hear them through the wall like walk, this way"
(Reference to the Run DMC song "walk this way" music video)
"they tryin to dissuade my thoughts I'm a slave to myself I just obey my boss"
(I believe this a reference to Lu's relationship with his record label. He is saying that he is a slave to himself and nobody else. He stated several times that being with big record label is like slavery)
"Its all in disarray this parade I walk, they get amazed when they catch a chain I toss, amidst disarray of different ways I talk, and it hangs from your brain if my chain you caught"
(The parade is the rap game that Lu is walking in, but it is in disarray or out of order. The chain symbolizes his lines and people get amazed when understand what he is saying. Also in parades (mardi gras) when you catch an actual chain people get excited. It 'hangs from your brain' is simply you remember it and it take thought to actually understand his lines.)
"like i cough without covering my mouth"
(You catch Lu's lines like you catch a cold when somebody doesn't cover their mouth)
"I tip the scales like the king of the south"
(tip meaning T.I.P. aka T.I. aka the king of the south. T.I. is a skinny guy and if he were on a balancing scale his side would be higher than a lot of people's because there is not a lot of weight, but since T.I is a much better rapper than a lot the rappers that are out right now, T.I.'s side is heavier so Lupe is saying he is above other rappers and tips the scales like T.I. does)
"forgot that I was fat I lost my way, but now I'm back looking for the shade I sought, not Wonders, Scott Summers, so don't make me take off my stunners"
('Wonders' refers to Stevie Wonder. Lu is saying that the reason why he wears shades is not for the reasons why Stevie wears shades, but for the reasons why Scott Summers(Cyclops form X-Men) wears shades so you better not make him take off his "stunnas.")
"Bobby Ray you know you got my numbers and them deer(there) can't see us like hunters, ey"
Credit goes to CT
;)
lol Anon, I followed up back then saying just because I don't like doesn't mean I don't understand it..same goes for now.
ReplyDeleteClever and witty lines aren't something new to him..it's been like that for practically every verse he's ever made lol. It's not always about the lyrics..His flow was slow and stuttered (especially in the beginning), lines were simple, the whole verse was just kind of awkward and off-speed. Some lines lost coherence trying to force the rhyme ("and it hangs from your brain if my chain you caught"), and some lines didn't even rhyme at all ("I tip the scales like the king of the south, forgot that I was fat I lost my way, but now I'm back looking for the shade I sought"). And I hate that voice he makes sometimes (you know what I'm talking about).
If you think I'm "over-analyzing" (lol), well then okay I agree. That's the reason why I just simply said "The verse is a bit weak". That's all. Everyone has their own opinion.
i think the tip line is just a refence to how T.I. is always talking about his past of drug dealing. And ofcourse when you sell drugs you have to weigh them with a scale...
ReplyDelete@Anonymous (above this comment)
ReplyDeleteThat's something that stuns me every time with Lu. Sometimes his verses are so cleverly worded that there can be three or four different explanations which ALL make sense.
can someone explain this verse to me
ReplyDeletei also think this verse is weak and not that impressive. I only liked the stevie wonder/cyclops line.
ReplyDeleteEverything else kinda felt generic.
i forgot to say: dont get me wrong, it's still entertaining, but I feel like Lupe coulda done more. Still a better verse than bob though...but for obvious reasons.
ReplyDeleteI like the lyrics. But its how he delivered the rhymes that made it not that great. Love the concept of the song though!
ReplyDeleteThe Scott Summers line is boss
ReplyDeleteThe Rick Ross line also has more meaning...
ReplyDelete"I See (IC) in my eyeglasses...but they sayin what i'm seein through is false like Ross"
IC Sunglasses is a Berlin-based glasses company that have the "IC!" logo in the glass. They are hard to imitate...
Don't know if anyone brought that up yet, just furthering the genius that is Lu'...peace
also, not getting to in depth..he uses a play on words.
ReplyDelete"forgot that i was FAT, i lost my way/WEIGH"
also fat is relating to the "scale"
i always thought the line " they get amazed when they catch these chains I toss? meant that he doesn't submit to the mainstream music industry, and foregoes cliches like bling.
ReplyDelete"Its all in disarray this parade I walk, they get amazed when they catch a chain I toss, amidst disarray of different ways I talk, and it hangs from your brain if my chain you caught"
ReplyDeleteThis is another example of the double/triple entendre Lupe plays with in his lines/verses.
As pointed, the chain represents Lu's lines when its understood by his peers.
Plus, the act of throwing the chain is basically rejecting the bling culture in society really.
It hangs in the brain, i.e. it lingers in your head in amazement and makes you think!
Finally, the image of a chain hanging from a brain is gruesome, i.e. his words can be lethal to some.
This man Lupe is a genius.
