Lupe Fiasco interview w/ Complex (talks Lasers Delay, Food & Liquor II & More)

Lupe talked to Complex about Japanese Cartoon, the Lasers delay, Food & Liquor 2 and more. - Check a part of the interview here:

Complex: So what is Japanese Cartoon?

Lupe Fiasco: Japanese Cartoon is my lifeblood. That was my Plan B. If Lupe Fiasco fails and Lasers never comes out, I have to do something. I still have to make music. I still have to go out and tour. I want to make music as good as Radiohead, as good as Coldplay. I can make hip-hop as good as anybody. But you get bored with that and you want new challenges. And for me, this is a new challenge.

Complex: You mentioned Japanese Cartoon being your Plan B, let’s talk about Plan A. A second ago, you said “If Lasers never comes out.” Will it not come out?

Lupe Fiasco: It could. The situation with me and my record company has gotten to the point where it’s just like…we’re really at our final straws. People could say it’s me, that “Lupe doesn’t want to make popular music” or “The label has got to have records that they can sell and Lupe is not giving them the records they want to sell” and XYZ.

I’ll meet a fan on the street and we’ll have a full conversation about it. There’s maybe six or seven people walking around who know the whole story with their mouths wide open and their jaws to the floor as to why Lasers has been held up to this point and why it’s not coming out. I can’t tell you that. We’re in a space where we’re still negotiating and some stuff isn’t meant for the public.

Complex: Do you see the record coming out any time soon?

Lupe Fiasco: God willing. I literally put it in God’s hands. You know what, Lasers is a record I poured my heart into. I was actually making my own music, in the studio making the songs, and rapping on them. And at the same time, making the music more acceptable. Not making it more poppy, but making it more popular. Putting it in the position where more people can understand it but at the same time still satisfy my hardcore fanbase.

Complex: You keep referring to it as Lasers, but on the Internet now people are saying the record could be called Food and Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album. Is that not a real title?

Lupe Fiasco: When I said that I was going to do an album called The Great American Rap Album, I did it. Lasers is one project.

Complex: So you have two albums already done?

Lupe Fiasco: Yeah. I make music every day. [Laughs.] Half of the next Japanese Cartoon record is done. When I say Lasers has been done for two and a half years, what do you think I’ve been doing since then?

I’ve been sitting back and making more music. I get beats every day from every producer. People want me to feature on their songs, and favors for favors, and all this other craziness. Lasers is one project on its own. It’s its own project, sitting being done, waiting to be released. And I’m in talks with doing the record after this one. So I’m constantly creating. But that doesn’t mean I’m constantly releasing....

  4. his attitude at the end bugs me smh. like CMON man! you're an influence on the hood. on the nerds. on society.
MAKE MUSIC and RELEASE it goddamit!
"Jay-z said im nice. that's success. im done."
^on some weezy 'im done' bullshit. No man! you're not done. you haven't even started. FIGHT the system. go out and compromise if you have to. but release music. add to your legacy, and along the way shape the lives of millions around the world in a positive manner.

  5. Wow something really musta gone on behind the scenes

  6. I love the end of the article where he breaks down his definition of success...I wish there was a video of that interview (or at least that part.)

  7. Damn. Lupe really might be done...As far as being in the mainstream side of music.....Atlantic really dont want to release the music. Maybe there's a whole different staff there now that isnt rockin with Lupe the same way the staff in 05-07 did. I don't know.

I don't get it though. The cool sold 600,000+, had grammy nominations and had a top 10 single in the country which is great today. Even BOB's album didnt sell as much as Lupe's debut.. Why hold lupe's album when so many others are everywhere and still flopping number wise??

  8. This really makes me sad. Lupe Fiasco is an awesome person and rapper, and Atlantic needs to freaking release it! If not, some other record company will pick him up. Come on Lupe, you can do it!

    ReplyDelete
  9. YO F this i'm dead serious how about we get another petition asking atlantic to release freaking lasers or we boycott atlantic. dont buy from no artist. Lupe is as good or even better than any artist there 600,000 + on the cool grammy. I know atlantic is his label but who are they to decide what we want to listen to? or to not release something one of the gretest artist has worked so hard on? f that another petition if they dont listen then we boycott!!!

  11. I have 2 things to say one good one bad:

The good thing is the success speach should be engraved in history....

The bad thing is The way he treated Sean the Robot..... after his blog being one of the pillars of the protest lupe takes so at heart... he just calls him "The kid who runs the Lupe blog", wtf? Y did he send props to him them?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Na, Lupe specifically mentioned Sean in that Semtex interview a while back

Doubt he meant it in a bad way

    ReplyDelete
  13. He says something dark and twisted went on behind he scenes? Wtf

    ReplyDelete
  14. For 2 and a half years... I am surprised nobody died..

  15. Emperor Lu said... "The bad thing is The way he treated Sean the Robot..... after his blog being one of the pillars of the protest lupe takes so at heart... he just calls him "The kid who runs the Lupe blog", wtf? Y did he send props to him them?"
    -----

Nothing bad about it...he doesn't even have to say my name for you to know who he means..that's already a statement in itself.

And to me it's like this:

Getting a shout out on Semtex' radio show > being mentioned (by name) in a written Complex Online Interview

    ReplyDelete
  16. does anybody know why he can't just leave the label? i'm sure he would if he could so i figure there must be some reason...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Chris S, There are things in this world called contracts, on those contracts there are termination clauses.... If lupe wants to leave the label he probably would have to pay loads... then we would have a new MC Hammer.

Thts just one theory ... Never had the pleasure to meet with lupe or atlantics CPO's to talk about it

    ReplyDelete
  18. Emperor Lu is right, it costs a lot of money to buy out contracts. Even if he bought out his contract, because he has technically turned LASERS into the label for release there is a really good chance that they would still own it. Remember how hard Q-Tip fought to get the rights to Kamaal the Abstract back after he was DROPPED from Dreamworks (if not look it up)? It took a long time and he was dropped, he didn't terminate his contract willingly which I would assume would make negotiations to get your music back slightly easier.

And remember that MTV interview that came shortly after the petition started where Lupe was talking about not wanting to give up publishing rights because he has 9 brothers and sisters who've got to eat, and people whose lawyer bills he's paying? I think we can deduce this is probably his same state of mind for choosing to stay in limbo.

    ReplyDelete
  19. OMG, the way lupe described Ian Curtis... he can't be an asshole, he's just like that! When I saw lupe live I was JAW-DROPPED! I have been to many concerts and never seen someone perform the way he does! That was a maniac on stage! And after the show I was standing with his dj simon and when lupe came out, i was damn near convinced that lupe and wasalu weren't the same person! My first reaction was "dude what the hell were u on, and how the hell did it get out of the system so fast?!!!"

Man we need another europe tour!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well ladies and gentlemen, it's been a nice ride. A lot of good music...ups and downs, excitement, etc

Now that Lupe's been blackballed and never releases any mixtapes or anything, who is the new person we are looking for?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow... It seems as if Wasalu was always Wasalu, he never changed...

After reading this I consider Lu a legend and one the GOAT...

He is the only nigga to have the balls to do him and only him... it might seem narcissistic, but give Lu credit for being himself and not letting the game change himself... and Lu is the only nigga to get as far as did being himself...

Lupe has strong words... man even Drake called Lu a legend... Here I thought Drake didn't know what it took to be a good artist... You see, Lu took his own rout and Drake took his... Which one is more successful...?

Reading this interview made me feel sad... I feel as if Lu might be done...

...Atlantic needs to release f-ing LASERS!...

At least after reading this interview I now truly understand why Lu want to be done after making three albums...

All Haters need to GO TO F-ing SLEEP...

Lu The Ruler Around Theses Seas!

  22. J. Cole is the next breath of fresh air, as much as I love Lupe...I have moved on to more realistic superfandom.

    ReplyDelete
  23. There's a lot of music coming to hold mothafuckas over for Lupe's album, and from my view J. Cole is the most appropriate example.

But I dunno why a lot of y'all are saying "looks like Lu's done". I recall a big part of that interview being about how he makes music every day, and how he'll never stop.

    ReplyDelete
  24. lupe doesnt want laser's released. he left clues in the interview. many of artist have openly stated there is black magic involved in creating mainstream music. Lupe is protecting us from atlantic.

"shake off your masters...pray to god, build your minds faster"

do your research, masters are what new age religion calls spirits, but christian no them to be falllen angles aka demons.
I sound crazy but there is a battle between good and evil going on.

  25. Damn its sad to say but L-u-p-Emperor is done, man. He doesnt really care and both sides are being stubborn. No compromise and nothing moves. So with that being said J. Cole is the future of hip hop. He isnt as good as Lupe but he is an incredible emerging artist, hes future is really bright...cant say the same for Lu

  27. Crzy thing is w/ all that said Lupe is still Top 10-15 ever w/ only 2 albums, 4 mixtapes, and some unreleased music. Ill probably never be as big of a fan as i was of Lupe. And if the album actually drops ill go nuts

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm a fan of Lupe because of what he stands for. The fact that he implements his beliefs in his music is just a plus.

Personally, I don't care if Lasers doesn't come out. I don't care if he drops the mic and quits now. I would LOVE it if it did come out. But I'm already satisfied with the music he's already made. To me, he is already the greatest rapper ever. Based on what standards you ask? My own standards. To each his own, just like Lupe determines success, I acknowledge him as the best rapper ever on my standards.

And I totally agree with everything he said in this interview. Once he has reached a pinnacle in his career, and only he can determine when that is, then it's perfectly ok for him to quit or do whatever. Not for us to decide.

    ReplyDelete
  29. So... when is Lasers coming out?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes, Wasalu, yes. Becuase releasing another mixtape is called dropping too much music... SMH

Well, it was a fun ride. I guess J.Cole it is then.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Didn't he say he was making music like everyday and if lasers doesn't get released he'll release F&L II and so on. Why do people think he's quitting?

It's like damn, people need to learn how to read...

    ReplyDelete
  32. @ Emperor Lu and others

thank you for the response. i was thinking about the contracts too. it would be one thing if the artist didn't release any material then asked out. but Lupe is literally giving them the albums they're asking for.

from what i understand, he didn't even wanna do Lasers. it was supposed to be LUPEnd. but since the label wanted him to do another album he made Lasers. and now they won't release it??

    ReplyDelete
  33. Man, J. Cole's "Who Dat?" was such a big disappointment. Hope he doesn't turn into another lame mainstream rapper.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Something shady is going down behind the scenes...

Take Lupe at his word that only 5 people in the world know why Laser's isn't released.

    ReplyDelete
  35. "humdi lila allah jehova"
    -Erykah Badu

All i got to say lupe... you know what it means! ;) LASERS FOREVER!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree... Lupe is a cutie... He can get it...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Still standing or Lu..

...it just sounds like we wont be hearing anything new from him for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmm, all I see here is stuff we already knew. And stuff he's said before. The only thing new here is that F&L II is already done, but when is THAT coming out, anyway...

    1. He measures his own success. Yes, Lupe, we know you think you're successful. And yes, I used the verb think.
    2. Lasers release date is still unknown to him.
    3. JC.
    4. Little rant against forum users.
    5. Not dropping, to what is according to him, "too much music."

Now, I only have a problem with one thing: #5. He says he doesn't like to make music without a purpose, which is something we already knew of him, thanks to the very lack of it. But refusing to drop a mixtape, or the who-knows-why-it-was-cancelled-mixtape Friend of the People, because for him that's dropping too much music??

I'm sorry but that just sounds like a very mediocre attempt at an excuse. Because if that's a "lot," I assume that what we are getting now, is "some," right? Because if I'm not wrong, the ONLY officially released song has been Shinning Down. (I won't count Go To Sleep, because it's not even on sale) Everything else has been either features from other artists releases, leaks, or whatever that track with UNKLE was.

But hey, you don't necessarily owe us music, Lupe, I know that. But creating music everyday, to hold it up? That's against logic. If you are such an anarchist, why not go against the business. You want a reason to release that music? Rebellion against what they are doing to you. Or are you waiting to die, and then wait for Atlantic to create some type of "Greatest Unreleased Hits" LP?

Everything else is fucked up, I understand. Thanks god, the Lupend blog follows other artists similar to Lupe. That way I'll have something to listen to until whenever whatever it is drops.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I highly doubt any of u read the interview, Lupe never said dat he was gonna quit if Lasers dont come out, he said dat if Lasers dont come out then F&L 2 comes out, if dat doesnt come out then F&L 3 is gonna come out and then F&L 4 then The Cool 2 and then The Cool 3, I kno he was saying that jokingly but he pretty much said that he's not gonna stop making music, also he said dat he makes songs pretty much everyday either by himself or being featured on something, so I'm not understandin why ppl are sayin dat we wont be hearin anything from him soon, u ppl expect too much from him, to be honest, Lu doesnt even need to make another album, his 1st 2 will stay as relevant as Illmatic or Reasonable Doubt are today and those were made over 10 years ago, Lu himself said dat he isnt gonna quit making music and yet u ppl are giving up on him, it's funny how fans turn on someone that quick

    ReplyDelete
  40. " Lu doesnt even need to make another album,"

    G. damn idiot speaking...

Seriously, people who speak like this are living in a bubble. ask any 10 young-young adults who lupe fiasco is and I hope you even get ONE.

He is relevant to us, but not to everyone.

Musicians are not just musicians, they are entertainers. They have to entertain a crowd. no professional musician wants to make music for 10 people.

They can't make a living. The reason Lu has a ferrari is because of us.

So you think Lu doesn't owe his fans anything? You think the president doesn't have to answer to the voters, when they all get piss'd?

If Lu doesn't keep making music or bringing up new talent he's going to go through all that banked cash in no time.

His clothing line is too elite for me and 99% of the people on this blog.

if he don't make any more records, he going back to westside chicago.

And another thing. How, is he going to have money to buy 100k beats from pharell or kanye etc. if he is not making any records selling 500k? He can't be underground he needs a label to shell out the dough. He needs to get advertising, best buy extra tracks special edition etc.

I hope the exec's and Lu compromise to get the record out. Hopefully, Lu ain't instigating anything for this delay.

    -Fresh Kou

  41. ^^^^ Dude, it's true, he could retire right now and his tracks stay relevant, Biggie had about 2 albums before he died and he's still relevent plus he had unreleased songs as well, Lupe himself just said dat he could make music without it actually bein on albums, think about Wayne, most of his songs dats on the radio arent even on his albums, Lupe could do the same and still be something with just havin 2 albums out, also the reason y Lupe got the money for those beats are from doin tours and being featured on other ppls songs, also since he's doin this Japanese Cartoon punk rock band then I'll highly doubt dat he'll go broke anytime soon.
