I am glad that he cleared up that it's State RUN Radio. I never understood why people heard "Crime" and started complaining saying he changed it due to some push back or something. I always heard it as State Run Radio.
HOLD UP SINGLE IS FIRE and hold the F up with that kid cudi sh*t everyone always gotta say some sh*t about Lu reminds them of Kid Cudo -_- GTFO! The only song where he spits simular to cudi is what u want. RIP to all that f*ckin comparing Lu to other dudes. *SHOW GOES ON*
Does anyone have a clue when it will be on Itunes? I really want to buy it from there so that it can get more popular on the Itunes charts. That would be really helpful for it to get big.
Sean can you make a post about key things he said in the stream i didn't see the entire stream (im sure others didnt see the entire thing.... PLEASE!!! Thank you. I walked in and i heard him say army girl but i didn't know what he said about it!
Everyone acts like mainstream is so bad. I love Lupe and never want him to go straight mainstream, but just because a song is catchy or mainstreamish doesn't make it bad. His flow is dope and still has the lyrics. It's a sick song.
Is it just me, or was this song a little underwhelming? Lyrically, I just don't see it. The beat is good, the message is excellent, and it fits the theme of the album very well. However, these lyrics are too simplified.
I became a fan of Lupe Fiasco for the lyricism, and this single just doesn't have it. I realize that Atlantic probably needs a successful single, and this one has the potential to easily hit the Top 10. However, it is still lyrically weak. #DumbItDown anyone?
Verse 1 Have you ever the feeling that, you was being had? Don’t that shit that make you mad? They treat you like a slave Put chains all on your soul And put whips up on your back They be lying through their teeth Hope you slip up off your path I don’t switch up I just laugh Put my kicks up on their desk Unaffected by their threats And then get Busy on they ass See that’s how that Chi-town made me That’s how my daddy raised me That glitterin’ may not be gold Don’t let nobody play me If you are my homeboy You never have to pay me Go on and put your hands up When times is hard you stand up L-U-P the man, cuz The brand that the fans trust So even if they ban us They’ll never slow my plans up
Chorus Alright, Already the show goes on All night till the mornin we dream so long Anybody ever wonder When they will see the sun up Just remember when come up The show goes on
Verse 2 One in the air for the people that here Two in the air for the father that’s there Three in the air for kids in the ghetto Four for the kids that don’t wanna be there None for the niggas tryin’ to hold ‘em back Five in the air for the teacher not scared To tell those kids that’s livin’ in the ghetto That the niggas holdin’ back that the world is theres Ya ya the world is yours I was once that little boy Terrified of the world Now I’m on a world tour I will give up everything Even start a world war For these ghetto girls and boys I’m rapping ‘round the world for Africa to New York Haiti then I detour Oakland to Auckland ‘Cross the strip to Detroit Say hip hop only destroy Tell ‘em look at me boy I hope your son don’t have a gun And never be a d-boy
Verse 3 So no matter what you been through No matter what you in to No matter what you see When you look outside your window Brown grass or green grass Picket fence or barbed wire Never ever put ‘em down You just lift your arms higher Raise em til your arms tired Let em know you’re there That you struggle and survivin And that you’re gon’ persevere Ya, ain’t nobody leavin Nobody going home Even if they turn the lights out The show is going on Alright
There are some lyrical tricks thrown in there. Listen for them harder. The upbeat tempo and catchy beat make them hard to catch. Either way, not every song has to be a lyrical puzzle! There's something to be said about a song that has a clear positive message and still has a poetic style to it. Just listen harder and you'll hear the lyrical tricks as well.
Did anyone notice how he says "Africa to New York Haiti then I detour" Haiti only happened after he went mountain climbing and after the album was supposedly finished. I have a feeling this song was written recently.
The hook they changed sixty times was either Nothin' On You or Airplanes I believe, both of which went to B.o.B. You can find the original version of Nothin' On You by Lupe on Youtube. He was pissed of at them for changing it sixty times so refused to do it anymore that's why I dont think that's this song.
this is just like TI making "live your life" with that sample...a semi-popular catchy song transformed into a hip hop beat. appealing to the masses...still a fly song tho
I would have loved for Shining Down to have been the first official single or even I'm Beaming but I like this joint to so I'm just happy we finally rolling. Lasers!!
I second Ashley on this one. The SECOND the horns hit, I thought of Right Above It. It's like the exact same sound and they're both produced by Kane Beatz.
That said, the song is still fire. Atta boy Lu! Keep the hits coming.
I like how they sampled float on for this track. All in all its a classic Lupe track that will be popular too. We all got what we wanted which is truly good music. I just do not know why Atlantic even thought they could have a track like THIS sitting at HQ for so long.
I dont know. Im not really feeling it I feel so let down it sounds like any rapper could have made this song. Usually Lupe is on some completely different planet and all his songs are so unique this sounds like something any rapper on the radio could have put together. The message is still there, which is good but still im not feeling it. Damn atlantic and the music industry its ruining the art. Who knows if we'll get to hear Lupe being himself again.. FREE LUPE
Yo Lupe knows what he's doin'. This song, which is catchy as hell, will spread LASERS and Lupe's message. It just has a catchy more mass appealing beat. But, Lupe still did his thing and LASERS is goin' to be sick! Don't hate because a song is catchy.
I've listened to this 6 times in a row now. Read the lyrics as I went a long the last couple times...Lupe wrote this recently. It's obvious that this was wrote to appeal to the masses and the radio n all that which is sad, but the message is there, and the float on sample is sick. The way I see it is this:
Best case scenario: Lupe is playin' Atlantic. There will be this and maybe 1 other mainstream sounding single, and then there will be the stuff he wrote 2 years ago that we'll just then be getting.
Worst case scenario: Everything on Lasers was dumbed down this far. U can't not see that this song isn't lyrically on Lupe's usual level.
Every please stop saying it's not good because of mainstream. Yal'll is really missing the point. He has a good message in the song and I can respect that. Big ups to Lupe though. Track is really nice. I love the violin in the song. Sounds like a anime song or something close. Buying the track whenever I can.
All the haters of this song are retarded, you all say Lupe is so underrated and he never sells or gets the recognition that he desereves.Well this song will be played on the radio and expand his fanbase. You all expect a classic track everytime he touches the mic the song is really good. Its not nearly my favorite song his made but it is really good.Thw only wordplay i heard was the slave/slay line
This song is most likely a compromise with Atlantic Records. It was definitely written recently. I'm sure they added this song as a single, but the rest Lupe said is the old original music for LASERS. He made a song that he feels okay with because he is putting his message out, but it should be a hit single for Atlantic. It's catchy and pretty good. Not my favorite every, but it'll definitely get plays in my car.

The new single is amazing... Lupe fiasco is well above the other rappers... he plays in a different league. He always come up a positive, conscious, meaningful message. Looking forward to the new album as I'm beaming and shining down were amazing. Yas from France. peace.
Kind of unoriginal with the chorus... Decent flow, but it's a very catchy single. Maybe Lupe will get more credit cause of this, but I really hope he hasn't changed.
comment box is full lol
ReplyDeleteI am glad that he cleared up that it's State RUN Radio. I never understood why people heard "Crime" and started complaining saying he changed it due to some push back or something. I always heard it as State Run Radio.
ReplyDeletei heard crime weird
ReplyDeleteITS SO PERFECT. EVEN IF IT REMINDS ME JUST A LIIIIITTTTLEEEEEEE LIKE CUDI, LU MAKES IT HIS OWN BRILLIANCE. LOVE HIM!
ReplyDeleteI love the singel!!
ReplyDeleteGreat song cant wait the album! I like when he speeds up his flow in the second half
ReplyDeletewhy isn't this on iTunes??!!!
ReplyDeleteIt will probably be on iTunes soon.
ReplyDeleteThe beat and hook are more mainstream which is OK. Lupe can spread his message and it's catchy.
He he still has that dope flow and sick lyrics!
LASERS!
HOLD UP SINGLE IS FIRE
ReplyDeleteand hold the F up with that kid cudi sh*t everyone always gotta say some sh*t about Lu reminds them of Kid Cudo -_- GTFO! The only song where he spits simular to cudi is what u want. RIP to all that f*ckin comparing Lu to other dudes. *SHOW GOES ON*
Such a hot track. Lupe doesn't dissapoint.
ReplyDeleteCan someone post the lyrics please!!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have a clue when it will be on Itunes?
ReplyDeleteI really want to buy it from there so that it can get more popular on the Itunes charts. That would be really helpful for it to get big.
Who's singing the hook?????? Anyone know?
ReplyDeleteA M A Z I N G.
ReplyDeleteSo hype right now.
Can't wait til Georgetown show on Sat!
:DDD
Keep uplighting those unable to see the light Lu!
ReplyDeleteIt will be appreciated one day...
Yeah who's singing the hook? And someone said something about an illuminati reference, where is that?
ReplyDeleteSean can you make a post about key things he said in the stream i didn't see the entire stream (im sure others didnt see the entire thing.... PLEASE!!! Thank you. I walked in and i heard him say army girl but i didn't know what he said about it!
ReplyDeletethe content of the song is nice... but its sad that the beat had to sound mainstream in order for it to be promoted...
ReplyDeletei can't stop smiling. love you lu
ReplyDeleteEveryone acts like mainstream is so bad. I love Lupe and never want him to go straight mainstream, but just because a song is catchy or mainstreamish doesn't make it bad. His flow is dope and still has the lyrics. It's a sick song.
ReplyDeletei just hope Atlantic puts a strong push behind this song. this should be another top 10 record for Lu. i really feelin this shit.
ReplyDeleteThe beat is actually a good use of the Modest Mouse sample, no matter what people say. Should be a hit!
ReplyDeleteClassic Lupe flow! FnF Up!
is the chorus supposed to borrow from the song "float on" by modest mouse?
ReplyDeleteIlluminati reference? Where?
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or was this song a little underwhelming? Lyrically, I just don't see it. The beat is good, the message is excellent, and it fits the theme of the album very well. However, these lyrics are too simplified.

@Greg
ReplyDeleteIt's a sample from them yeah.
Oh so disappointed.
ReplyDeleteWhere are the realists?
I'm not bothered if Lupe does mainstream, Superstar is one of my favourite Lupe songs, as is Daydreaming...
But this is nothin on those singles or the leaks that originally came a few months back; What You Want, Love Letter to the Beat, Beaming etc...
Hope this isn't a sign of what Lupe had to compromise to get this album out.
Verse 1
ReplyDeleteHave you ever the feeling that, you was being had?
Don’t that shit that make you mad?
They treat you like a slave
Put chains all on your soul
And put whips up on your back
They be lying through their teeth
Hope you slip up off your path
I don’t switch up I just laugh
Put my kicks up on their desk
Unaffected by their threats
And then get Busy on they ass
See that’s how that Chi-town made me
That’s how my daddy raised me
That glitterin’ may not be gold
Don’t let nobody play me
If you are my homeboy
You never have to pay me
Go on and put your hands up
When times is hard you stand up
L-U-P the man, cuz
The brand that the fans trust
So even if they ban us
They’ll never slow my plans up
Chorus
Alright, Already the show goes on
All night till the mornin we dream so long
Anybody ever wonder
When they will see the sun up
Just remember when come up
The show goes on
Verse 2
One in the air for the people that here
Two in the air for the father that’s there
Three in the air for kids in the ghetto
Four for the kids that don’t wanna be there
None for the niggas tryin’ to hold ‘em back
Five in the air for the teacher not scared
To tell those kids that’s livin’ in the ghetto
That the niggas holdin’ back that the world is theres
Ya ya the world is yours
I was once that little boy
Terrified of the world
Now I’m on a world tour
I will give up everything
Even start a world war
For these ghetto girls and boys
I’m rapping ‘round the world for
Africa to New York
Haiti then I detour
Oakland to Auckland
‘Cross the strip to Detroit
Say hip hop only destroy
Tell ‘em look at me boy
I hope your son don’t have a gun
And never be a d-boy
Verse 3
So no matter what you been through
No matter what you in to
No matter what you see
When you look outside your window
Brown grass or green grass
Picket fence or barbed wire
Never ever put ‘em down
You just lift your arms higher
Raise em til your arms tired
Let em know you’re there
That you struggle and survivin
And that you’re gon’ persevere
Ya, ain’t nobody leavin
Nobody going home
Even if they turn the lights out
The show is going on
Alright

ReplyDelete"Cross the strip" should be Gaza Strip.
ReplyDeleteTo the people complaining that this is too mainstream - get over it. Song is sick. Period.
ReplyDeleteI bet the song fits perfect when in rotation with the rest of the album so just relax
ReplyDelete& his slightly dumb down lyrics is still >>>>>> lyrical than everyone else or anything else on the radio
so be happy for Lu & get over yoself as a stan
BEAUTIFUL :D
ReplyDeleteDid anyone notice how he says "Africa to New York
ReplyDeleteHaiti then I detour"
Haiti only happened after he went mountain climbing and after the album was supposedly finished. I have a feeling this song was written recently.
thisll be a big radio hit.
ReplyDeleteI think this is the song where he say they changed the hook 60x if its recent
ReplyDeleteThe hook they changed sixty times was either Nothin' On You or Airplanes I believe, both of which went to B.o.B. You can find the original version of Nothin' On You by Lupe on Youtube. He was pissed of at them for changing it sixty times so refused to do it anymore that's why I dont think that's this song.
ReplyDeleteThis song is his! And its a smash!
Everyone that's disappointed doesn't realize big words and fancy metaphors aren't the only criteria involved in gauging lyricism.
ReplyDeleteTry writing your own songs, then you'll appreciate the lyrics here much more.
Song is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!who's tht on the hook
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the song!
ReplyDeleteWho sings the hook??

Srsly - this sounds like Modest Mouse's "Float On"...
ReplyDeleteListen to it and then listen to this song...
Lupe: the show goes on alright
Modest Mouse: We'll all float on alright
Hmm... Hmmm....
Then compare the choruses! HMMM!!!!! Joizus
it doesnt take a genius to figure that out liz....
ReplyDelete@Liz
ReplyDeleteThe beat sampled Modest Mouse! Do you read the comments?
@JJ
Exactly, this song has great lyrics. He has some lyrical trickery, but it focuses on the message.
And, the way he writes is very poetic-style. The song is amazing!
I would have loved for Shining Down to have been the first official single or even I'm Beaming but I like this joint to so I'm just happy we finally rolling. Lasers!!
ReplyDeleteThe beat kinda sounds like Wayne's "Right Above it" because of the horns.

ReplyDeletestoked to see shit actually moving...!!!
Those violins...its gotta be Miri Ben-Ari. Absolutely LOVE it.

Geekin' on some new Lu
Every CD needs a song that can be catchy to the masses, get radio play, and be used to promote the album.
ReplyDeleteYou think Lupe is going to write stuff and then release a whole dumb downed album?
Regardless its still a business.
Everyone said the same thing when Superstar came out...
so does this mean "i'm beaming" and "shining down" isnt on the album?

ReplyDelete"from oakland to auckland" - pep love, make your move
This is decent, but after the wait pretty disappointing
Song is nice and doesnt really sound commercial 2 me...But i pray this song goes to the charts and he's speakn the truth on here....Whos doin chorus?
ReplyDeleteJR Get Money on the hook.
ReplyDeleteYo Lupe said on the Shade 45 morning show this morning this LASERS will be all the old music that was already on it.
You NEVER have to doubt that Lupe would dumb it down! He never will!
