On the sound/content:
"It's way more of a pop album, to be honest, for various reasons and various forces within the industry and what have you, ['Lasers'] came with all this baggage, a lot of social baggage. We opened up the album with a manifesto. When I say we opened up the album before we even recorded one song, we wrote a manifesto. We came up with the things we wanted to see changed in the world and that kinda took a life of its own. For me, that was the point of [this] album."
On the social statement:
"It's less about the music and more about actually coming out and really having a strong social statement that you could feel, like back in the '60s or '70s when Bob Dylan made a song, it was a movement.
To see ['Lasers'] become this whole thing in and of itself, and become bigger than itself and bigger than the music, differs radically from my first two records."

He dumbed it down indeed...i really wanna hear the original lasers album..fans who protested for this could be dissapointed
ReplyDeleteQuestion
ReplyDeletewhy isn't there more features from Lupe Fiasco on Kanye's albums?
Oh boy....well hopefully F&L II will be better -_-
ReplyDeleteDumbing it down huh...I don't know about Lasers anymore.
ReplyDeletei am confuse
ReplyDeleteSooooooooo........ when does F&L II come out?
ReplyDeleteIt'll still be one of the best albums ever made...all his albums have been instant classics and we can all agree on that.
ReplyDeleteGiven that the motive behind the LASERS album might be a little different, I assure you people will still buy it and love it.
Regardless of what the critics and wishy washy fans say, I'm still buying $100 worth of LASERS CD's before I even crack the plastic of my first one, off top.
I'm worried a little, but I just think there's mad confusion cuz one article will say "pop" then in a interview Lu said "more popular". Like if the songs are pop like superstar I don't think that'll be bad. But F&L II is also gonna drop just in case.
ReplyDeletechill chill everyone. even lupe says this is a great album (his best). gotta give the man a break. you guys are acting like its some soulja boy album. low quality for lupe is still better than 90% of everything else out there. and since when is making music that is popular a bad thing. as long as he stays true to his message i see no problem with it. L.A.S.E.R.S.
ReplyDeletei aint scare cause i`ve got 1 reason-LUPE
ReplyDeletewen he says 'pop' hes talkin bout the SOUND, not the lyrics.
ReplyDelete"they want me take make prince pants
ReplyDeletebut i withstand...I aint gotten into that"
Well...that statement no longer holds true =(. The Man-1...Lupe/fans-0.
Lupe said something similar about the cool:
ReplyDelete""You gonna have mad poppy beats," he added of his upcoming project. "Everyone is going to dance to them. But when you listen to the records, it's kind of ... you can enjoy it, but wondering, 'Should I really be dancing to this record?' " "

I feel like people always get the wrong idea when they hear "Pop."
ReplyDeleteIt'll just have a more popular, more mainstream sound, that doesn't mean that it won't have a message and that the songs won't be meaningful.
Massive Lupe fan. No longer buying this album
ReplyDelete^Your loss.
ReplyDeleteawesome, i cant wait to buy this album for myself and each of my friends.. i have to put them on!
ReplyDeleteIf the tracks are like TSGO, i thinks he failed. Would be his worst album
ReplyDelete^^^
ReplyDeleteyou took the words right of my mouth. all these lupe haters are going to feel very stupied. cant wait till it happens.
Question:
ReplyDeleteIs TSGO pop? Or is it lyrical? If you've answered yes to Pop then this album will suck.
yall forget kick push wasnt lyrical? and id say that food and liqour turned out alright. i think u haters might be surprised wen the album comes out. lupe had to make some compromises to get this album out to us. yall wud have been pissed if it never dropped. show some support. buy the album.
ReplyDeleteforget that! he dumbed down in this photograph! dude looks mad corney!
ReplyDeletei dont know what to think, to be honest...
ReplyDelete@anony # 2 I know right? wahat about N.E.R.D, cudi... and he's never featured on any jay z albums. He only featured on some type of remix. I dont get the music industry. They never show Lupe no love. :(
ReplyDeletehey guys. I have a brilliant idea.
ReplyDeleteare you ready?
Warning, I ain't tryna be a revolutionary, or an einstein, but I got an idea y'all never thought of.
wait until you hear the album.
^^^
ReplyDeletenow that my friend is a great idea
First lil b, then soulja now this?? SMH
ReplyDeletewho is lil b?
ReplyDeletePrince you spelt stupid wrong....which makes your statement void
ReplyDeleteYou guys need to RELAX.
ReplyDeleteWhen Lupe says "pop" he means the beats, you know the ones that white people like.
Now, Honestly don't expect LASERS to be lyrically insane. You will not have songs like The Coolest or Failure. LASSERS is going to be great album MUSICALLY not lyrically. That title goes to The Cool.
The Show Goes On and Never Forget You are examples that LASERS is NOT lyrical. But if you ignore your Hip-Hop state of mind you'll find that those songs are great musical compositions. I personally think LASERS will be Lu's highest rated album by critics. I expect to see a near perfect metacritic score of 94.
I know the album not being lyrical sucks ass, but Lu can't be SUPER Lupe lyrical ALL the time now. Let the mainstream enjoy Carrera for a change. Plus when F&L2:TGARA drops we know that it will live up to it's name; the intro was BANANAS and it's only an intro, lol.
Pop album with crappy mainstream sound and not lyrical. Boy Atlantic shot themselves in the foot with this album by tampering with it. After the fans protesting for it, then the album becomes a former shell of it's self because of Atlantic this album is gonna have a backlash.
ReplyDeleteWe Want Substance In The Place Of Popularity.
ReplyDeleteWe Will Not Compromise Who We Are To Be Accepted By The Crowd.
Lupe would be hypocritical if he ignored the lasers manifesto on the album, being that the manifesto is the whole concept for the album. have faith everyone.
Ya'll niggas are never pleased, Lupe said that The Cool album was gonna be pop as well and that album turned out great, ya'll only heard 2 songs and now yall think the entire album is gonna be horrible?, eat a dick haters, u ppl get pissed that ppl dont listen to Lupe but then wen he tries to make a song that EVERYBODY can listen to.....ya'll turn around and say that he sold out, get the fuck outta here.......March 8th 2011.
ReplyDeleteim buying 20 copies of Lasers. yay!!Go ME :D
ReplyDeleteSidenote to all the simple minded fools:
ReplyDeleteNever forget you ft John Legend IS EXTREMELY POP song, YET it is probably one of his best...
Man, how the fuck are we fans if we not gna purchase an album just cuz it might sound more "Pop", Who gives a fuck, Lupe is about a positive message, his lyrical skill was just icing on the cake. Honestly, I listen to Distant Relatives, Troubadour, Reflection Eternal, etc for their positive messages, pop SOUNDS nicer, pop and positive message is a win win, You have all his mixtapes, 2 albums, and TGARA for lyrical amusement, but dont put Lasers down just for this petty reason, We a small minority who crave ultra-lyricism, we are not the force that sells CD's, we can protest all we want, but ultimately we're a small dot on the map, Let this guy expand his audience, Let him prosper, Let him get his music out, Let him see our gratitude for his hard work, The guy went through hell these last few years.
ReplyDeleteLupe said himself multiple times that this is his "BEST WORK, EVERRR".
ReplyDeleteBetter believe that.
No need to fear, Lu never disappoints.
....Well, minus that Lil B/ Soulja Boy collab talk.
But then again, Lupe is all about balance.
Gotta love & respect it.
Bunch of hipsters here. Already decided you're not going to buy an album just because you think it may not have an underground vibe to it?
ReplyDeleteYou know what sounded poppy? Shining Down and I'm Beaming.
ReplyDeleteYou know what had character and something to think about? Shining Down and I'm Beaming.
TBPH, the fact of Lupe announcing "This is more of a pop album" does not change a thing. We know he can bring consciousness to his records.
Lasers is going to be dope no matter what...!!!
ReplyDeleteThe consciousness is a MAJOR part of Lupe's greatness and appeal, something no critic can dispute. I love Lupe for that. However, the fact is (or my opinion is, his best tracks have been HIP HOP,"Failure," Theme Music to a Drive-by," "Kick-Push," and many, many, many more.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is he's CONFORMING to the sound of today, which is necessary to remain relevant in today's music scene, but it also lessens his appeal. I thought (perhaps wrongly) that Lupe was an avant garde renegade, but he's made concessions. Can't blame the dude, but he's no longer my cup of tea.Note til the end cometh.
...you guys are wack.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know why I bother reading these comments on here. I'm not sayin' you have to like everything he puts out (i.e. STAN), but it ain't even out yet! And who gives a fck about it sounding "pop"? Pop = popular. Plenty of your favorite artists have made popular tracks and records. So what? If it's good, it's good, regardless if it sounds "pop" or "underground" or whatever you elitists think is "good music."
I know what they haven't done is have a popular sound with a message. Which is what he's wanting to accomplish anyway. Both parties, him and the record label, get what the fck they want.
Are you guys INSANE? This album is gonna be the best of his work. Period.
