Lupe Fiasco's oft-delayed, way too overthought third album fuses the seething, political rap of the underground with the motivational, occasionally emo fist-pumping that's been at the top of the charts in the past year."Words I Never Said" is like B.o.B's "Airplanes" or Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" with a dash of early-'90s Ice Cube and a whole bunch of Evanescence angst.Armed with that wonky combination, Fiasco smuggles 9/11 conspiracies and a fairly sophisticated take on the Middle East into a pop-rap anthem. Compared to Lasers' other confrontational crossover songs (the flimsy "State Run Radio," the nearly clever "All Black Everything"), "Words" is an effective attempt at culture-jamming the Billboard charts.

thats wack people will say what they want, but lupe did his thing on every verse, while it is not f&L or the the cool, lasers is still a great album and lupe didnt dissapoint on this one.
ReplyDeletealways a fan, cant wait to see you on tour man, been too long since you've came thru jersey.
I give it 5/10.
ReplyDelete"Words I Never Said" is like B.o.B's "Airplanes" or Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" with a dash of early-'90s Ice Cube and a whole bunch of Evanescence angst."
ReplyDeleteairplanes?

ReplyDelete2 out of 5 Still im a Lupe Fan So im buying 2 copies anyway! Food and Liquor Two(2) Where you AT!!!
ReplyDeletethese monkeys who write reviews are morons who dont listen to shit thats actually good and give it a 6/10 where wocka flocka would probably come out with a usual trap muzik album and give it like a 7-8 on 10 and saying its his best work, great production, great rhymes and lyrics SMFH!
ReplyDelete@suge
ReplyDeleteif you honestly can't see that comparison you suck at life. go listen to the hook again. it's very airplanes-esque and it's written by and produced by the same 2 responsible for love the way you lie. and by ice cube he meant in the tone of the dissenting public authority...wtf bro
and he said evanscence ANGST. he didn't say it sounds like an Ev song...
GOD U PEOPLE ARE LAME
I swear I hate seeing this unecessary blemish on Lupe's career its truely sad .. And the worst thing is that it was something out of his control. Either way I love the album . I think i'll be playing this more than the cool .
ReplyDelete"Words I Never Said" is like B.o.B's "Airplanes" or Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" with a dash of early-'90s Ice Cube and a whole bunch of Evanescence angst."
ReplyDeleteSay what now???? 0_o
:/
^
ReplyDeleteIts okay, Charlie Sheen wrote this review while he was on drugs....smh freakin retards don't know wat good music is.
No, they do know what they are talking about. This album deserves a 6/10. Higher than that would only depict fanboyism, an Altantic-paid review, or simply musical delusion.
ReplyDeletethe album is at best a 7/10. i think all the comparisons made some sense. uneducated rap listeners and dickriding fanboys will eat this album up. people who can create opinions w/out bias will find to album to be mediocre
ReplyDeleteState Run Radio = Flimsy? One word I THOUGHT would never be associated with it but since hearing the butchered hook on the album version, I can see why it was called such.
ReplyDeleteAnd they dissed the shit out of "All Black Everything".
this album isn't as good as f&l or cool..after listening to it i believe lupe did his best with the production of the songs. I don't blame ppl criticizing this album because its missing the substance that made the cool and f&l great!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I only thought the only good tracks from lasers were Letting Go and Beautiful Lasers. These 2 tracks had dark verses much like songs from The Cool. Spin was right to give it a 6/10, and when compared to Lupe's other albums it would only get a 3/10 imo.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge Lupe fan and i'll buy the album to support, but I really hope he steps up on his next one.
10/10
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you all like to hear great lyrics on weak-ass Nas beats.
Lupe put together great lyrics with solid beats...get over it.
...did they really just compare words i never said to love the way you lie?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry are you saying the Hurt me Soul beat is weak? Or maybe the beat from The Cool? Or any beat produced by Soundtrakk? You may call it weak but imo they mesh with Lupe's style perfectly. That's why his previous albums were so great.
ReplyDelete^^^ absolutely agree
ReplyDeleteIts funny how people cling to the production styles of the 90's and claim anything that doesn't sound that way isn't 'real hip hop'. Na making music that sounds the same over and over again aint real hip hop.
ReplyDeleteAnd 'All Black Everything' will probably go down as his greatest song.
So If you got a problem with this album's direction go find some new up and coming rapper, who's trying to make music, that sounds like it came 15 years ago.lol.
But don't get on that typical "My favorite wants more fans,so he's selling out" bullshit. Catering only to his core fanbase is the reason why this album got delayed in the first place. Bashing this album and not supporting it will cause F&L 2 to be delayed.
Casual fans are taking heed to these comments and might not give this album a chance, and Atlantic could give fuck less about fans thinking they ruined the ablum. They'll just think they were right along if this album fails. So keep bashing the album, Lupe is the only person it's hurting.smh
^^^ -____- look guys. the album was bad. case closed. All of the hooks were just down right horrible. That MDMA guy needs to be shot. The beats were subpar, no the beats were terrible. the lyrics were decent at best. this equates to a bad album. i dont care who made the album, be it atlantic or be it lupe. the album was terrible. WTF was that hook on State run radio??? did yall hear that mess? what in the fck. this album pissed me off so bad. All black Everything is the only half decent track but since its apart of this album..its starting to sound like garbage also. i wouldnt pay for this album if it was free.
ReplyDeletetwitter: @ALLCAPS_
Losers sit in dark rooms and write hateful comments and articles. Lasers shine and dont give a fuck.
ReplyDeletePeace out.
P.S. The magazine gives it 6/10 whereas the fan rating is 9/10. Hahaha. Eff the media tryna bring him down.
^^Bashing this album is healthy. After listening to the album I was truly hurt, Lupe is a lyrical genius, I remember listen to his music for the first time and not knowing what the hell he was talking about and coming back to it years later and just being blown away. Lyrically this album doesn't even compare close to his other projects. I am not trying to hurt Lupe he is still the greatest, but as for the people of Atlantic why would you do this, WHY!?! And am I the only one that noticed there was absolutely no production from Soundtrackk!!?!?!
ReplyDelete^^ Have respect for this post, but I would rather bash the album because frankly, it is just not as good as the first 2 albums. If it fails, it fails. Lupe and Atlantic deserve what they get succeed or fail.
ReplyDeleteI will bash the album so casual fans will heed my comment because I believe that his songs from his previous albums were on alot higher level from a lyrical content standpoint. I will support and standby the Lupe that put out F&L and The Cool because they are creative and unique albums that do not come around often.I bash because I just feel disappointed how Lasers turned out.
Also Hurt Me Soul should go down as his greatest song
The fact that he tried makin it a pop album and that atlantic pushes pop sounding beats on him makes it hella wack. Songs like i'm beamin or shining down had more of that LASERS feel. Which is what i thought was what was gonna be on the album but it's mostly pop sounding. & All black everything has that kind of chill hurt me soul vibe which i think is hella sick. I hope Food & liquor 2 will have its food & liquor taste. I like a little bit more than half the album though, but honestly, MDMA should be featured on at most, one song..
ReplyDeleteDamn yo chill out. U guys are acting like every song in the f&l wad a classic like the cool didnt have lame music. High definition was the most grainiest song I've heard in my life! Yes lasers isn't on par with the other albums that's cuz he fired his staff and kept like two people which means no Santos or gemstones to wrote hooks for. Cuz lets face it his are never that great. But chill the fuck off. I love this album. It's positive and straight forward it's shines like a laser should u ever think that's the point of the album let's face it NO ONE stays the same that's y u lames hope on the next dick that plays a "soulful" beat. Nas was never the same after illmatic kanye after college dropout and jay after the first two blue prints. And to be quite honest linking park after meteora an artist evolves only a moron stays the same. Please get the fuck outta here with this this ain't real hip hop shit. U guys are insatiable I hope u Guys hate the album so much u stop posting on this site. All u want is the same shit. If he really wanted to he could release another food and liquor right now but all ud say is damn what happened to lupe he ain't the same. So please find another dick to ride. I already. I can't stand whiny needy selfish bitches
ReplyDeleteHurt Me Soul should go down as his greatest song
ReplyDelete^^^ I COULDN'T AGREE WITH YOU MORE!!! can't wait for F&L 2...
Haven't heard the album except for the tracks that come with the itunes pass, but just by hearing those few songs my mind is filled with thought provoking lyrics.
ReplyDeleteApparently people are paying more attention to how the album is suppose to appeal to a broader audience. Why do people ignore lyrical content? Lupe is a master of his craft, and no on can tell him how to do it better than himself. Simple minded people send shots, without understanding the masterful skill it took to create radio friendly music but still have the controversial lyrics and underlying message of forget the BS and be yourself. *LASERS* IS BOTTOMLINE REVOLUTIONARY TO HIPHOP. And i personally appreciate any artist willing to cross boundaries, an mix it up a little. ITS ART & ITS BEAUTIFUL. God bless it all. And i will pray for Lupe an his family, for their loss.
LOVE ALWAYS SHINES EVERYTIME REMEMBER to SMILE.
@Ayolntel how are u going to make a statement about the lyrical content on Lasers when u haven't even heard the album
ReplyDeleteI love you AyoIntel, and Enrique. :D
ReplyDeleteL.A.S.E.R.S. forever, no matter what :)
P.S. The loser above me was so full of hate that he just jumped to comment without reading your full post, AyoIntel, so chill :)
damn.. for those hatin' did ya'll even read the LASERS manifesto?!?! smh.
ReplyDelete^^ LASER FIST PUMP! :D :p
ReplyDeleteYou people need to look at the album objectively. I'm a fucking huge Lupe fan, from his 3rd verse on Touch the Sky to all his mixtapes do far and to his last 2 albums, LASERS feels like a smack in the face and a complete change of style.
ReplyDeleteThere's so much autotune it's a sin and all the MDMA is putting me off it completely. Atlantic truly dicked this album. The fan petition and march was all for nought, we haven't been given the LASERS Lupe wanted to give us, we've been given a commercialised bastardization of what it should have been all thanks to Atlantic's greed.
Now i'm not surprised that Lu himself said he hated LASERS in an interview.
^^ Dont change his words just to prove your point, bro. He said he hated the process, and thats not cos of the music/beats. It's cos of Atlantic's dickery with the releasing. Are you forgetting that most of this stuff was recorded/idealized more than 3 years back? :)
ReplyDelete^^
ReplyDeleteI took it vaguely out of context, I didn't change his wording.
I know it's Atlantic at fault and no Lupe, I also doubt some of these song are 3 years old, considering some song that were supposed to be on the album aren't on.
Does anyone know lupes contract situation? how many more albums is he obligated to make for atlantic? I'm a huge lupe fan and will buy the album to support him, but I'm with everyone else when they say that it doesn't live up to his prior albums and that the commercial bastardization of it by Atlantic was definitely a unilateral decision. I want this album to succeed and for lupe to get compensated for the bullshit of a process he had to endure. But i don't want F&L 2 to go through the same shit. We all know Lupe's still has that lyrical genius in him when we're a year and a half removed from Enemy of the State and half a year from "Go to Sleep".
ReplyDeleteHe should release what the real LASERS woulda sounded like as a mixtape if he can..
^^
ReplyDelete6 album contract IIRC. 3 more or 2 more and a greatest hits. That's why he wanted to do L.U.P.End after The Cool as it would've been 3 albums and then a greatest hits.
Album just sucks, why must people be so defensive? Stop acting like this is hot. The album is garbage with few bright spots, and we must not let Atlantic ruin another Lupe album again.
ReplyDeleteAlbum just doesn't have any lasting power. For example, Nas fans still listen to Illmatic, It Was Written, Stillmatic,etc.... Hardly ever do your hear his fans mention Nastradamus, Street Disciple, and his other lackluster efforts. Alot of his fans defend those projects, but as time goes on, its like those albums never happened.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't call Atlantic greedy either. They really put their weight behind their artist when the artist is about to release an album. And they are just trying to recoup those expenses. ESPN's been playing snippets of LASERS for a good month, and nothing else. You think that shit is free?
ReplyDeleteF&L didn't sell and they let him come right back with The Cool, but in today's economy you can only put out records you can work. And look at all the comments from people who already heard the album..lol. If it wasn't for Atlantic, most of y'all would of never heard of LUPE anyway. If people still bought music we wouldn't be dealing with this.
^F&L would've sold if it the leak didn't happen. Lupe's buzz was at all time high at that point, but the leak killed it.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I hate is that the album is only 50ish minutes long. They could have added at least 2 other songs that were originally supposed to be on it.
ReplyDelete^^^ I agree. The only thing that truly irks me about Lasers is that it's short. Honestly, he told you guys it would be popular sounding. Is it better than F&L and The Cool? No. Is it horrible? No. The songs are getting better. I think the album has two big problems. 1) Lupe going around talking about how he hates it, which is seeping into the fanbase because they don't actually read, they just skim through it. 2) The live versions were better. State Run Radio is AWESOME, it's just the live version was better. Same thing with Beautiful Lasers. 1500 or Nothin' just make the album sound better and a little less trance-hop.
ReplyDeleteNews flash what album doesn't leak prior to it's release. No offense but what sells is poppy beats. Because that's what most people wanna listen to. I mean I'll admit when f&l came out I got the leak. I went back and bought it but that was after the cool and I established I liked lupe I was a late adoptee but I eventually did. Lasers is a great album. All u hate it are just mad it wasn't what u wanted. It's no where near and lyrical as his previous albums that much I'll say
ReplyDeleteIf you compare this album to F&L and The Cool, this album is nowhere as good. 5/10 if you compare it to those albums
ReplyDeleteJust listening to it I give it a 7/10. And that's after about 4 or 5 listens. It's not "great" by any means. I don't mind some of the pop beats, but the previous LPs' were better. Lyrically, he's ok. Still not his best. Heck, Enemy of the state was better.
I think one person said "All Black Everything" would be his greatest song ever. Please never come back here. It was one of the better songs on the album, but nowhere near his greatest ever.
And I agree, this album won't be talked of much in the future when talking about Lupe's career (unless mentioning something negative)
I'm sure a lot of these tracks are relatively new or rewritten and weren't part of the original finished project. He even said that Atlantic wouldn't release it unless he "Dumbed it Down".
I seriously think those that say this album deserves anything over an 8 or 8.5 are just riding his dick. Let's be objective here...
^^
ReplyDeleteI think All black everything is his best song. 'American Terrorist' and 'Hurt me Soul' complain bout the past which is not too original. This song poses the scary questions that most intelligent blacks ask. And he playfully illustrated the domino effect of slavery all the way to implying the possibility of its non existence effecting hip hop, to crack being no non existent, which would make gangs non existent.etc. Anybody can talk about all thats wrong in the world but that song indirectly gets at why. Shit Lupe said its his best song, but its on Lasers( an album actually aimed at others besides you lol). Maybe I should never comeback here, being that I can formulate my own opinion smh
Look guys I agree that the hooks are wack but the verses are gr8 I like the beats as well but don't hate on the album cuz its not his fault at least he gave us Words I Never Said the truest track of all time & All Black Everything is goin down in history ill still support lupe no matter what compared to nowadays shit its 200/100 compared to his last albums 8/10 he been let down by the beats & hooks and stupid vocals effects I know this album will pick up new audience so stop making bad comments about the album & Lupe he still deserves his commercial success its his living after all.
