Lupe Fiasco will join Howard Zinn's "The People Speak, Live!" in Chicago

It has just been announced that Lupe will join Howard Zinn's "The People Speak, Live!," an evening of dramatic readings and songs of rebels, dissenters, visionairies, and prophets from our past and present, at the Metro in Chicago on January 31st. Unfortunately tickets for it are already sold out.

We already have such an amazing cast from Howard Zinn's "The People Speak, Live!" with Matt Damon -- one week from today, on Jan 31 at Metro Chicago -- but we're thrilled to announce that Lupe Fiasco is joining us as well. Lupe is a featured actor in the film The People Speak and contributed "American Terrorist" to the film's soundtrack. He also recently featured a sample from one of Howard Zinn's talks on a new track.

Howard Zinn, a maverick historian whose landmark leftist manifesto "A People's History of the United States" became a cultural touchstone for a generation, died on Wednesday in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 87.

He had suffered a heart attack, according to the Boston Globe. - via MTV

NYMag published an article about The People Speak including the following statement by Lupe about Howard Zinn's universal appeal:

"What he did and what he’s pushing with the movie and the books and all that, I think it’s something that crosses cultures, crosses beyond white, black, Chinese, Asian, whatever. You know, it speaks to everybody."

Fan Report: Lupe Fiasco @ UPenn for The People Speak

One of our readers, Sean Connors, just sent us his review/report and some pics of the event for The People Speak which went down @ UPenn in Philly today. (Thanks for that!)

Lupe, DMC and Chris Moore were present at the event for an in-depth discussion with the audience and more...read below!


The show kicked off with Lupe entering a dark stage with some swagger in his walk. He went to the podium and recited Muhammad Ali's writing on why he refused to fight in the Vietnam war. He did so with great energy.

After Lupe's part concluded, DMC took the stage and recited Public Enemy's "Fight The Power". After DMC, film excerpts were played, one included Lupe reciting the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party Petition Against the War in Vietnam...

via TheDailyNorthwestern: Lupe Fiasco returned to Northwestern’s campus Wednesday night - this time not as a performer but as an advocate and educator.

Lupe, actor Michael Ealy and author Anthony Arnove spoke Wednesday to more than 500 attendees as part of a campus tour to promote History’s new documentary, “The People Speak.”

The performance at the Leverone Auditorium was hosted by the Center for Student Involvement and NU history prof. Nancy Maclean.

Video: Chris Moore & Lupe Fiasco @ GWU's Press Conference for "The People Speak"

As previously reported, director Chris Moore and Lupe Fiasco visited the George Washington University (GWU) campus to promote the film "The People Speak" yesterday.

In the video above, Chris Moore explains that the movie is made in part by sponsors prominent in Hollywood, many who wished to remain anonymous.

Lupe tells DC Community Examiner, Khadijah Ali-Coleman that he hopes that  the movie encourages young people to take action and become activists.

After the jump you can  see how students in the nation's capital and Lupe performed on a civics quiz asked by a Citizenship and Immigration Services officer.

via The Daily Colonial: GW welcomed to campus hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco and film producer Chris Moore on Monday evening to discuss their upcoming film The People Speak: Democracy Is Not a Spectator Sport.

The film challenges people to stand up in their communities by performing dramatic reading from historical activists.

Lupe Fiasco, a cast member, joined Moore, one of the film’s executive producers, to speak about the film’s message in the Jack Morton Auditorium to an audience of politically-engaged students.

The documentary shows the rich history of dissent in U.S. history, and explores why it is so relevant and urgent today.
